Proof66 Notes

Dewar's 12yr blended scotch is "double aged" taking 12yr scotch whiskies and then returning them to oak for a final "marrying" of flavors.

As the name might suggest, the company John Dewar and Sons was founded in 1846 by founder John Dewar, Sr and his sons John, Jr and Thomas Dewar. The began in 1846 as a seller of spirits and began experimenting with what turned out to be very popular blends. They were the first company to offer its scotch in bottles rather than simply casks. They went through a series of ownership changes--as many companies in Scotland did--in the latter half of the 20th century. They were finally sold to Bacardi in 1998. Today they own a number of different, well-known distilleries (themselves under the umbrella of Bacardi) that contribute to their blends as well as producing their own single-malts.

When I first bought this, it was $27 at my supermarket - only a few dollars more than White Label. I couldn't believe how enjoyable this was for the money! Fresh on the nose with fruit and sweet on the palate, but not too sweet. When I went back to buy another bottle, the price had jumped to $40. I really like this stuff but if I'm going to pay $40 for a bottle of scotch, I'll stick to JWB or a single malt.

Always avoided Dewar's. however this is a solid offering in blended scotch. Better than Grand McNish12 yr. Smoother taste with more character. Better bottle. Still not as complex or as much peat as JW black. Depending on your price point could be a much better value. I prefer a better scotch for 1st dram. This is solid blended scotch for follow up drams.

Very tasty. Some peat. Smooth. Nice warming sensation. Much, much better than Dewars White Label - no comparison. Better than JW Black. Smoother than Black Grouse but similar. Very nice straight up.

More flavor than white label (especially the peat presence), smooth, far better than almost any blend in the price range(or even almost double the range) but runs almost $40 in my area and for that much I'd rather spend a bit more to get a decent single malt. I heartily recommend picking up a bottle if you can find a good deal on one though

A peated whiskey, my favorite of the dewars range thus far, better than 18 for me. The peat can disapate over time and I think this age of blends is just right for the overall balance and character of this particular malt. Of course I'll point you to a higher price point malt if you enjoy this smoke (ard, laph, lag). That being said it trumps black label in it's price range, perhaps rivals double black which is a compliment. Good smokey bar blend, try a dram.

Cheaper than JWalker Black Label but close inquality. A good sturdy blended scotch at a good price. Lightly smoky and woody.Recommended for an everyday scotch.

Considering I'm not a fan of Dewars white label, I was surprised by the 12yo.  Enjoyed it neat.  It had an interesting nose and tastes.

When made properly, blended Scotch whisky should strike an effective balance between peat, fruit, smoke, sweetness, floral elements, and booze heat. When improperly made, it can taste like someone dumped an ashtray in your Scotch.

Dewar's 12 year old Scotch Whiskey is very tasty. Light and oaky...it is quite good, especially for the price range.
