Proof66 Notes

As the name might suggest, the company John Dewar and Sons was founded in 1846 by founder John Dewar, Sr and his sons John, Jr and Thomas Dewar. The began in 1846 as a seller of spirits and began experimenting with what turned out to be very popular blends. They were the first company to offer its scotch in bottles rather than simply casks. They went through a series of ownership changes--as many companies in Scotland did--in the latter half of the 20th century. They were finally sold to Bacardi in 1998. Today they own a number of different, well-known distilleries (themselves under the umbrella of Bacardi) that contribute to their blends as well as producing their own single-malts.

Dewar's Highlander Honey is, so far as we know (May, 2013) the only flavored scotch in the world. Whether you think this triumph or tragedy, Dewar's White Label blended scotch is used as the base blended with Scottish honey (made from real bees, the marketing website informs us, working diligently near the Aberfeldy Distillery).

The 2013 Wine Enthusiast review (Kara Newman) was forgiving of flavored scotches philosphically saying, "A pleasant Scotch-like smokiness, which cuts the intense sweetness."

3 stars is probably more appropriate, but this one brings back memories from my teenage years. It's just sweetness, spice, and a little smoke, but the flavor it leaves in your mouth is just like those Swisher Sweets cigars I smoked 20+ years ago. I prefer to have my drinks neat, but I agree with NeatPour regarding the ice on this one.

I think JD honey is a better way to go but regardless don't drink this neat (or any honey liquor). Needs ice to bring down the high sugar/sweetness.
