Proof66 Notes

Dewar's White Label scotch was first produced in 1899 and remains their most popular brand of scotch. The recipe is a closely guarded secret and said to be a blend of over forty different scotches. Today, it remains one of the most recognized scotches on earth.

Went to a local pub for a burger and was presented with limited choices for a pre-meal drink. Jameson-John W red and this Dewars. Plus an "iffy" looking bottle of WT101. Easy choice. I think as I experience more and different whiskys my appreciation for some of these budget brands has grown higher rather than lower. This Dewars combines sweetness and some malt and a hint of smoke to provide an acceptable drink. No offsetting tastes or "hotness" on the finish. Mild but well rounded. Rather than adding ice a water back works for me.

Phizbin (2016-10-30):
I like this: "My appreciation for some of these budget brands has grown higher... " I feel exactly the same way. Sometimes I just want a drink without being confronted with huge proof, an abundance of flavor notes, and concern about justifying the price. Like reading Stephen King instead of Shakespeare.

Cranecreek (2016-10-30):
Exactly what I wanted to project Phizbin..you said it in a defining way.

Ah, the old stand-by scotch! When I think of a blend, Dewars is the fist thing that comes to my mind. Smooth, dry, and consistent. “Ok” neat, a little better on the rocks - nothing bad, but nothing special or memorable. I found it to be a little too bland in a Rob Roy when using a spicier vermouth. This is the place where anyone wanting to get into scotch should start!

I'm by no means a scotch aficionado, but this gets 3.5 stars based on a combination of taste and value. Not at all harsh. I enjoy neat or on the rocks (depending on my mood). This also serves as many restaurants "well" scotch, and as such is a great bargain. Miles ahead of JW Red.

Agree to this, especially when you say miles away from the JW Red that it's like a sandpaper

Muncher (2015-06-02):
I'm by no means an expert, I'm just a simple man that likes to drink and collect bottles of liquor! I do think a safe recommendation would be to try the Glenmorangie 10 year. It's a wonderful scotch that seems to be universally enjoyed by everyone of all experience levels. I like to do as much research as I can before buying because I hate wasting money! The reviews on here are a good start, but whiskyadvocate.com, connosr.com, and Ralfy (YouTube) all have good write ups on it. The price for a bottle is $30-40 in my neck of the woods. I'm really curious of your opinion on it!

This was my first foray into Scotch. While I agree with most of the reviewers (sweet, not harsh good beginner Scotch, great value) I heartily disagree with the reviewers who said this was good on ice. Sipping neat had me wondering at all the flavors and aromas. Dropped in 2 cubes and had a flashback to my first experience with bottom shelf vodka. ROUGH everywhere with only an earthy industrial solvent bouquet. Water or ice may open up a bourbon, but if you're gonna drink this one on the rocks you'll need to let it air out a little and let the ice melt some, but you'll never appreciate the nose and palate that you get drinking this neat. My advice, try it neat first and tell me I'm wrong. I think this is the best way to appreciate this entry level Scotch. 4 stars.

I normally agree with BDanner's assessments of things, but I disagree with his "Miles ahead of JW Red" statement. I did a side by side with the two and I think the Red Label gets an unfair judgement more often than not on this site. That said, I can see why a scotch newbie might favor the Dewar's; it's sweeter, has less smoke and brine, and has no finish at all ("smooth".....I still hate that word. It makes me feel excessively amateur). I slightly favor the JW Red because I prefer flavor over drinkability (aka blandness and lack of finish).

BDanner (2015-06-01):
Point taken, and I am a scotch "newbie"...perhaps JW Red shouldn't have been my first scotch?

BDanner (2015-06-02):
Thanks for the advice! I'm totally lost in the scotch world. My biggest fear is plopping down $40/more for something I'm not going to like. I really would like to get into the scotch world, but find it very intimidating. A good starting point is very helpful.

probably the best scotch you're likely to get at this price, next to Speyburn 10 year. it's a good utility scotch for learners or mixing, the taste is friendly and sweet on the level of Four Roses or Jameson. it's not going to blow anybody away but it is a crowd pleaser. Personally I'd rather go bourbon at this price point.

This is kind of the nice of the black label, has well rounded edge taste, nice first taste and not so strong after taste, it basically and average whisky you can buy to bring to a party and hear no body cough

3.5 stars; a good "starter" scotch. mostly smooth (the finish is a little rough), a little sweet but not overly so like "budget" scotches, a hint of smoke, it really does have a unique flavor profile among other scotches. I use it mainly for mixed drinks (Rusty Nails for the most part) but is fine on it's own straight or on ice.

A good value scotch. I would place it somewhere between Johnnie Walker red label and black label. 3.5 stars, but I'll round up for benefit of the doubt.

No $20 scotch can even compare to dewars white. Hands down the best inexpensive scotch I have tried so far

Good starter scotch. This is where you learn there are so many more scotches out there and why this is a starter scotch.

Has a strong oak flavour, bit of a harsh finish but that can be difficult to avoid in the price range this is found at. Probably a good starter whiskey for those not willing to invest in some single malt - to it's credit it's the only middle shelf scotch I could find that was drinkable on the rocks.

I tried Dewars White at a local sports bar one night, as they had it on their "well scotch" menu for $3.50 (!) a glass. This is a very good starter whisky, especially if you don like the flavor punch that many people don like about whisky. This one is sweet, not overpowering, and very sippable. Theres almost no burn, and its inexpensive. I honestly thought, being the cheapest Dewars model, that this whisky would really be just for mixing, but I think it does just fine as a sipper. Id take this over JW Red Label any time, as Red is too harsh for me.
