Proof66 Notes

Doulgas Laing & Company is an independent company located in Glasgow, Scotland. They are scotch blender rather than distiller, which means they buy different single malt and grain whiskies and blend them for specific flavor profiles that suit their markets and tastes. It is named for Fred Douglas and Stewart Laing, who founded the company in 1948.

Douglas of Drumlanrig is a specialty range of scotches produced by Douglas Laing & Company: bottlers/blenders who buy up lots of whisky to produce their own range. The company was started in 1948 by Fred Douglas later succeeded by his sons. The single malt line is made in cooperation with Langside Distillers. The name "Douglas" comes from Sir James Douglas who was killed in battle serving Robert the Bruce during the crusades. "Drumlanrig" is the name of the castle.

Douglas of Drumlanrig Laphroaig 17 is aged for 17 years and sourced from the Laphroaig Distillery (though we have opted to list Douglas Laine & Company as the producer to better reflect their eye for selection, despite the fact this is not a blended scotch). Laphroaig is an Islay distillery owned by Beam.

The 2011 Wine Enthusiast review gushed that this was an Islay alternative that "won't blow out your palate with smoke"; they recommended a pairing with oysters and shellfish.

4.6/5, review is for the 21 yr 55% cask strength Douglas bottling. had this after brora 35 so didn't go in with high expectations but we liked this a lot, one thought it superior to brora! Ton going on with this scotch, not as long as brora but a lot of complexity. We saw it for $300 and at that price it was really great
