Rating Description

Tier 2
This is a Tier 2 score in the Whiskey category. It means critics have highly recommended the spirit as a benchmark in the category.

Proof66 Notes

One doesn't often think of buffalo in Kentucky but the distillery takes its name from the buffalo path (or "trace") that led to the banks of the Kentucky River in Franklin County. Buffalo Trace Distillery takes pride in the limestone water (being notably free of iron) and good soil conditions for grain. The site has had a working distillery since 1787 but the official Buffalo Trace first began operation in 1857. It obtained one of only four permits offered during Prohibition to maintain production for "medicinal purposes." Today, the distillery sits on a picturesque 119 acres and produces several labels of bourbon.
Buffalo Trace was named Distillery of the Year by the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It was named a national historic landmark in 2013.

Eagle Rare 10yr--along with the Buffalo Trace Bourbon--is one of Buffalo Trace's flagship spirits. Along with the required 50%+ corn in the mash bill to qualify as a bourbon, Eagle Rare has a somewhat higher quantity of rye, giving the bourbon a spicier, more robust flavor. As the label suggests, it's aged for 10 years on site.

BlueKitchen.net featured it on their "Best Bourbon Tour." They said: "This bourbon isn't a beginner's whiskey, but the rewards will be ready when you are."

I've left my original review in quotes underneath this revision. After reading GatoMaxx's review, I went back and checked my bottle of Eagle Rare 10yr. Mine is also missing the Single Barrel designation. I also decided to revisit my original taste test. If anything it's WORSE than I remember. Absolutely no characteristics that would earn this medals of any kind. Original Buffalo Trace is miles beyond this stuff. This product would not even be passable as a $15 bourbon, much less a $30 one. If I can find a bottle labeled as Single Barrel, I will revisit this review, but for now it's 2 stars... "Found this on sale at my local ABC store for about the same price as Buffalo Trace, so I decided to give it a try. I had looked over this bourbon in the past due to the fact that the bottle design didn't appeal to me. I know that's an odd reason, but I just never associate the wine bottle shape with bourbon. My first thought on this was very harsh on the nose with a strong alcohol smell that masked some of the more classic bourbon aromas. Unfortunately the nose was very indicative of the tasting notes as well. HARSH. Very rough around the edges, much the same as I noted about the Buffalo Trace, but ice melt or a splash of water did not even it out as with it's sister product. The classic toffee and vanilla notes are present, just not as prevalent as I like. Maybe I was expecting too much out of this one? For a couple dollars less, I'll buy the Buffalo Trace. For a couple dollars more I'll buy the Maker's Mark. Both are superior in my book."

This review is of my fourth bottle of Eagle Rare 10. The first three bottles I found to be quite outstanding, quite complex, and I gave a five star rating in a previous review on this site. All three were single barrel bottlings that were selected by Twin Liquors. The fourth bottle is one I found on the shelf of a liquor store in South Texas. The label does not indicate it is a single barrel bottling and it appears to be batched bottling. Well, it mustve been the leftovers. It was really woody and I mean the bad side of woody. Frankly two stars is a bit generous. The differences between the first three bottles and this one is startling, As if I was drinking something completely different.

I had this straight last night and added just a little water. It was a nice bourbon to relax with--a dark brown color with a little spice at the end and not much burn. It's my new favorite. For $24.99 in WI, you don't have to go over $30 for a good bourbon.

Really drinks like a light rye instead of a bourbon. It's very similar to my bottle of Templeton, which I like. I don't at all think it's "rough around the edges" or "harsh" like some of the previous reviews state. Perhaps they just need to explore the world of rye and then come back to the ER. I really can't find much to criticize about this whiskey other than the fact that I'm preferring full, bold whisk(e)ys these days instead of light, easy ones like this.

Thinner mouthfeel than four roses and Elijah Craig. Translates to a softer entrance for the burn.

It doesn't deliver on the promise of its price tag or of the quality of other Buffalo Trace products. I would prefer some of those, such as Stagg Jr, Weller 12 year, Sazerac, or even the basic Buffalo. It's not horrible, it just doesn't measure up to others at (or often below) its price range. Doesn't offer the complexity or smoothness I look for, and I love high proof spirits too so it doesn't deliver in that department either.

I have 13 bottles in the cabinet now and this is my favorite. One of my bottles is four roses single. I think the few poor reviews must have been a different barrel. Butter scotch toffee heat and smooth finish. The delicious smoky sipper is wonderfully viscous.

A super tasty single barrel bourbon! It is a bit rough on the edges, but the balance between sweet and spicey is special. Note that my experience is with Twin Liquors (Texas) select bottlings. Someone there really knows how to pick the barrels.

It's ok. I was likely expecting far more than this product could deliver. Buffalo Trace has some outstanding bourbons, but this one doesn't quite measure up to some of the others.

Like another reviewer said, this borders on "harsh". There is a slight, sweet undertone. But that is quickly washed away by the burn in the mouth and throat. Water does nothing to even it out. its drinkable, but For this price, you could get Four Roses Small Batch.

Im surprised the score on this is so low. Im drinking this for the first time and its incredibly smooth with that sweetness that I love about bourbon. Id recommend Eagle Rare for sure.

It's a pretty smooth bourbon with the stand out flavor's being the rye. It's 45 dollars where I am so I can't help but compare it to the first rye whiskey I had which is Bulleit rye. While eagle rare is a little smoother it also has way less rye flavors. With bulleit being half the price & my preference for larger more robust flavors I'm going to have to favor bulleit. I suppose this is a bit 'classier' & more people friendly due to the more mellow/smoother profile so I can see where rye enthusiasts would dig this

A delicious aroma of toffee leads to a sweet and spicy flavor. It's nutty and warm with a sensuous finish. A near-perfect balance of sweet and spice. A delicious bourbon. I could drink this every day. For more reviews, including the results of our bourbon taste tests, please visit ProfessorCocktail.com.

Can't get better than this. Smooth and chewy. Vanilla and oak. Probably the best all around bourbon.

Like an intricate, well-written novel filled with characters you don't really like, I feel like I missed out on something with this one. Spice, oak, and complexity were all present in spades but I come to bourbon looking first for warmth and a rich, sweet heart. This one bordered on harshness. Perhaps my tastes are too simple.

A nice bourbon but a little meek in the middle and the finish. Over time hints of leather, almost like sitting in a leather store, become prominent; which actually become more vibrant in it's 17 year old big brother. I wish they would have made this in an uncut and unfiltered version as it has a lot of potential in it, but seems to have lost a lot of it's character.

Ok. I love it! 10 year old bourbon and not too expensive. There's sugary wood taste with nice spices. Quite light body, maybe they should bottle it little bit more ABV? It's excellent whiskey for the price, but not perfect. There is something missing, but I can't say what it is. Maybe it is too light for so much wood, or maybe I'm asking too much?

Very smooth, with just enough spice to warm you up, which is perfect this time of year. A little more complex than Jim Beam Devil's Cut, and no one flavor is dominant, allowing Eagle Rare to be a great mixer. This one will definitely be a repeat buy for me.

I'm not crazy about this bourbon, to be honest. There's a lot of medicinal heat, and the nose is funky and herbal. It tastes like it's not quite aged long enough -- and for the price, I expect more, especially when there are better options.

When enjoyed neat, the flavors on this bourbon cannot be beat.  Strong but full of complex notes, I don't think you'll find a better bourbon at any price.  If you enjoy your bourbon on the rocks, however, you may enjoy a bourbon like Buffalo Trace more.

An amazing whiskey especially for the price. Only brain damaged frat boys or fasion victims would consider buying anything else in its $20-30 price range. It is worth about twice the money if you compare it in quality. A best buy for the low end (in price that is). Highly recommended for bars, but reference the drinks section on serving.

Get the 1.75ml bottle and non bourbon drinkers will ask about it, then try it, and then be hooked.

This is a very nice bourbon. Light, smooth, and flavorful without being overpowing. A must have addition to any bar.

My personal bourbon... I drink this pretty much before I drink anything else. Until I'm a millionaire and can polish off $500 bottles with nary a thought, this sparkling, beautiful, $30 bourbon is perfect.
