Proof66 Notes

With neighboring Scotland and Ireland producing vast amounts of whiskey, St George's Distillery stands alone as a rare distillery in England specializing in whiskey. Indeed, they claim to be the first English whiskey distillery in 120 years. It was founded in 2006 by James Nelstrop, from a family who claim a heritage going back to 1335 when William Nelstroppe opened a mill and his descendants became interested farming, commerce, and eventually whiskey.

So I purchased a cask strength version bottled at 60.9 ABV...no age statement, no matter, there is craftsmanship in this bottle, the peat is right there in the nose, not enough maturation to get much cask interplay, but this malt has a distinctive snap in the arrival that I liked quite a bit...overall the young peatiness to me tastes similar to Port Charlotte Heavily Peated and of course it doesn't yet have anywhere near the character of a Laphroiag, Cao Ila or Lagaluvin, though does it have to compete with those? at a $70 price tag it does, I took a chance on it because not only did my local big store cut the price dramatically to $29.99, but it's a curiousity this English Whisky and I personally love the heavily peated...I am interested to see what this company will do in the future, my sense is that it will be quite good...solid 4/5 it has a good peat thing going on and it's made with a lot of heart
