Proof66 Notes

Heaven Hill Distilleries was founded shortly after prohibition and in the height of the Great Depression with no brands and no ready available stocks of whiskey. Today, they claim an inventory of over 675,000 barrels. The company reports that it is "the largest independent, family-owned producer and marketer of distilled spirits in the country." While Heaven Hill focuses on bourbon, it produces a wide array of spirits.

Evan Williams claims to be the second largest selling brand of bourbon in the US. The brand itself is named for the reputed "first distiller" in 1783. We consider it a remarkably inexpensive bourbon.

Each year, the distillery releases a 10yr old limited edition, single-barrel bourbon, which we list separately. This is the Evan Williams 2000 Vintage.

For the money I cannot imagine a better bourbon. Smooth, full of flavor, the aroma is fantastic, toffee, caramel, raisins. Just wish the 2000 bottles weren't getting so hard to find now (2015)

This review is of barrel 1042. Other barrels of this vintage might be better, but this one is a real disappointment. My first experience with Evan Williams Single Barrel was the 2001 vintage, which I found very impressive. Where the 2001 is almost perfectly balanced, this 2000 is over-oaked. I've tried a number of Heaven Hill products recently, and this is the only one that hasn't impressed me.

The difference between this single barrel bourbon and a mass produced bourbon is is huge - and for only a few dollars more than what you would pay for a mediocre bourbon. While younger than the 12 year old that we used to reach for (and about the same money) the 12 year old has become a bit inconsistent of late. This is a much safer bet and highly recommended- especially for the money. It is also very approachable for a novice whiskey drinker, smooth with a lot of charm, worth giving your whiskey virginity too without a backward glance or regret.
