Proof66 Notes

Evan Williams claims to be the second largest selling brand of bourbon in the US. The brand itself is named for the reputed "first distiller" in 1783. We consider it a remarkably inexpensive bourbon.Evan Williams Black Label is their flagship bourbon was once labeled as aged for 7 years in oak prior to bottling. It is now a non-aged statement whiskey and only acknowledged as "extra aged."

Evan Williams Black Label is decent value bourbon better than Jim Beam White. Nose is rich pipe tobacco, leather, with vanilla and caramel. The entry is smooth corn ,spice, leather with short finish of spice It is not as good as when it was 7 years old but better than Beam White label .

Works well in any bourbon cocktail and very drinkable on its own. Very similar nose and taste to regular Makers Mark IMO at half the price.

Picked up a couple of 50ml bottles in my search for a bargain bourbon. This is a small step above Jim Beam (I picked up a couple 50's of that as well). This has an age statement of 7 years and the extra 3 years over the Beam does show, but not enough to earn this any more stars. Pleasant nose. Caramel and oak. Toffee notes with a pleasant burn on the finish. Definitely more drinkable than the Beam, but still not as good as Benchmark, which is a couple dollars less. However, Based on this sample, I will give some of Heaven Hills other offerings a shot.

This is my favorite of the budget bottles. I keep this or a Beam (depending on which I found cheapest) around for mixing, and it does that duty extremely well. It is quite sweet with good, moderately strong, albeit simple flavors. Mostly vanilla on this one. The texture and sweetness is something I would expect more from a Tennessee than a regular bourbon. I have no problems sipping it straight, but I would prefer not to. Chilled it makes a good shooter for a party. Particularly given its cost, it is an incredibly smooth bourbon. If cost were a factor, this would get more stars.

Lovely, bargain-priced bourbon, great for mixing and looking forward to try cooking with it. I feel it deserves a fourth star based on value-for-money.

Evan Williams (black label) as I call it is what is considered a bottom shelf Bourbon so my 3 star rating is excellent considering I am comparing this against Bourbons at 3 times the price. I believe you always have to rate whiskeys with the price in mind. You could take a bunch of $100 a bottle Bourbons and they would most likely all get 5 stars, but when you take a bourbon such as this Evan Williams at less than $20 for a liter and with the flavors it delivers than you also have a winner. This and Elijai Craig 12 are my current "table/every day type" Bourbons. They have classical Bourbon flavors and can be drank "neat". Granted they are not exceptional by any means but they do deliver a good dram of Bourbon.

BDanner (2016-01-09):
I love most of Heaven Hills stuff, but for some reason am not a fan of this. Try the EW Bottled in Bond if you can. It is my new favorite $15 bottle.

Cranecreek (2016-01-09):
Yes BD i wish i could find the bonded here in Wisconsin. Sent an e-mail to Heaven Hill on availability and never heard back from them. My review of this bourbon is based on finding a good/ not great tabel type bourbon. For now the EW and EC are fitting the bill but would like to here what others like.

This is extremely smooth, very sweet, with a bit of oak and almost a syrupy feel and taste on the tongue. What's missing for me is a depth of flavor and complexity. If I try really hard I can make out a very faint hint of rye, but there's not much else going on here. Strangely, I do like this better than either of its big brothers Evan Williams 1783 or Evan Williams Single Barrel (I got the 2003 vintage), which have a bit more going on, but are much more bitter. For the price its tough to beat Evan Williams (its even cheaper than Jim Beam White Label yet its better and much smoother). I actually prefer the even cheaper Heaven Hill black label to this (same distillery, more woody, not quite a smooth or sweet, a bit more interesting imo). Vaguely comparable to Jack Daniels (both are charcoal filtered btw), but Jack tastes of wood and maple syrup where Evan Williams is almost all maple syrup and amber to Jack's dark grade at that. Still impossible to knock for the price. You should probably try it just because its smooth, and very inexpensive without being garbage. Its drinkable neat or on the rocks just not very interesting to me. Same applied in coke or an Old Fashioned. Still, this might just turn out to be your budget/cooking bourbon, or its not impossible this could be your everyday go to. But for me personally I'll be drinking Old Forester as my go-to, and cooking with Old Heaven Hill.

Let me start by saying that this is by no means a fantastic bourbon. It's not going to blow you away by any means. That being said, for being a $12 dollar bourbon, it's at the top of it's class. Evan Williams Black Label has a complexity of flavor and a finish that you aren't going to find in any other bourbon in it's price range, or in many others almost twice it's price. For me it blows both Jim Beam and Jack Daniels away flavor wise and for half the price. Works great as a mixer and can be enjoyed over ice (though a little rough). I usually keep a bottle on hand for guests who want to try a bourbon or enjoy jack and cokes. Personally for an everyday bourbon I spend a little more and use Four Roses Yellow Label or Evan Eilliams Single Barrel (a truly divine bourbon), but have no problems with Evan Williams Black label if it's what is available

Very good for what it is--a lower shelf, inexpensive bourbon to be used mainly for mixing. Stronger, slightly more complex flavors than Jack, much better than Jim, at half their price, but shows a little bitter edge that disqualifies it for drinking neat, for me. But for a very small increase in price ($25/handle in Georgia) get the EW1783 Small Batch, which is a the same juice aged 8-10 years, and is a truly fine gem of a sipping whiskey.

Great for parties, and for just making a quick drink at home. I buy a small bottle of this from time to time when I know I'll be the only one drinking hard liquor. It has a passable taste for a really cheap price.

Unrefined, but I suppose it's not bad for a 12 dollar bottle. I can detect traits behind the rough edges reminiscent of the Single Barrel Vintage (2004) which is a fantastic bourbon. Wouldn't buy again because for only a few more bucks one could purchase a much better whiskey.

For a cheap bourbon its fairly good. I can either sip it or mix it and be fine either way. I would recommend this to someone who is wanting to try bourbon for the first time.

Soapy? It takes a good deal of water get past the soapiness for me; otherwise it rides the alcohol up through the back of my nose and hits me there too. Works for me in a Bourbon and Branch, the price helps too.

As I have written before I am not a drinker anymore. 14 years without a drop and have never liked bourbon much. I bought this on a lark. I poured myself a shot and down the hatch it went. Ok, I read much from brazen drunks about the complex tastes of exotic bourbons and I really could care less about that snooty stuff. I wanted something "drinkable". I found it in Evan Williams Black Label! I do get a strong caramel flavor. This is something that I could see as an everyday drink in the evening. A working mans bourbon. The finish is short and for me that's OK. I only had one shot, and spent the rest of the evening wanting more. That's about as good as it gets. Very little burn. I think this is best right out of the bottle. Don't ruin it with a mixer. The Evan Williams boys got this one right.

I suppose for the money it is what it is. If you can enjoy this then good for you... I certainly cannot. If you are going to get some liquor you may as well drop 20-25 USD and get something you can enjoy rather than spend 13-15 and get something so mediocre. If you're going to do it do it right

(2.5 out of 5). Hard to criticize it for the price. Has some unpleasant edges, but it mixes better than Jack at less than half the price, and can be sipped on its own in an emergency. $12 in my area.

This is better than the green label and fine and all as a bottom shelf straight bourbon but in no way anything very good. T.W. Samuels is much better quality for price. And yes I like it more than Jack Daniels but that's not saying much.

Great everyday bourbon! Spicy, peppery bites, almost reminiscent of Jack, but still finishes with a bourbon sweetness. Still has some lingering displeasantries, of a cheaper ($12.99 in PA) liquor, but if you life jack and cokes, evan and cokes will get you through those hard times between paychecks.

Your first sip of hard liquor gave you the shivers.  If you like that this is for you.  Strong-- runs up the roof of your mouth and up the back of your nose.  Can't recommend neat, even though there is come complexity.  I'd mix it.
