Proof66 Notes

Ezra Brooks bourbons are, from our standpoint, of somewhat mysterious origins. Our various nerd books are silent on the subject of "Ezra Brooks" despite the label promising 7 generations of expertise. The bourbons originate in Kentucky as "straight" bourbon, which requires at least 2 years of new barrel aging. They are also "charcoal mellowed" in a process somewhat similar to Tennessee whiskey such as Jack Daniels or George Dickel.

The 12yr single barrel promises a minimum age of 12 years on the bourbon--which is a relatively long age in the bourbon market--and bottled at a curious 99 proof (a point below the minimum for "bottled in bond" labeling), and higher than most other "small batch" bourbons.

According to a variety of sources (see, for example, the positive review and mention at Liquor Locusts as well as the Ezra Brooks Facebook site), the bourbon is produced at Heaven Hill for distribution by Luxco. This is supported by the filing at the Tax and Trade Bureau of the source in Kentucky but registered with the Missouri-based Luxco.

It's the rougher side of Elijah Craig, with a similar flavor and odor (and the same age statement) but more char and heat. Whereas Elijah is an excellent choice for anyone just getting into bourbon (or anyone trying to convince someone else to get into bourbon), this stuff is along the same lines but geared toward drinkers with a hardier palate and some previous bourbon experience. Elijah has always tastes to me more like it was stored in a completely uncharred barrel, and I get lots of wood but little smoke from it. This one leans heaver on the charcoal barbecue flavors of the barrel, and has more of a burnt sugar sweetness as compared to Elijah's vanilla caramel. Really good stuff, nice and smooth but still carries a kick for the advanced bourbon drinker, and doesn't need any help from mixers but makes a fine old fashioned (flame the orange peel to bring out Ezra's natural smoke). $35 in my area, rather than the $49 I see listed here.
