Proof66 Notes

Ezra Brooks bourbons are, from our standpoint, of somewhat mysterious origins. Our various nerd books are silent on the subject of "Ezra Brooks" despite the label promising 7 generations of expertise. The bourbons originate in Kentucky as "straight" bourbon, which requires at least 2 years of new barrel aging.

Shoutout to Tango, BDanner and Cranecreek for putting this back on my list! I had tried this 2-3 years ago but couldn’t remember enough about it to review it, so I picked up a new bottle. Another bargain find with great flavors that costs way less than it could/should. A very solid sipper on its own (both neat and over ice) that’s very well balanced. Nice rich vanilla and peanut butter with a strong oak presence that just rounds everything out nicely. Works perfectly in your standard bourbon cocktails and it’s cheap enough at under $15 a bottle to mix with ginger ale or cola and not feel guilty. Great bang-for-your-buck!

A tip for you and BD cause I know he will see this(and Tango too)-Run don't walk to your favorite big retailer-"Talisker Storm has been reduced to $39 ! Story is they want to exhaust the current inventory in the U.S. As to the Ezra Brooks-a great find as we all agree.

Thanks all for steering me into this top pick from the "bottom shelf". I agree with the comments on reviews posted. It bests a lot of bourbons including the Evan Williams extra aged black label. It is ironic that Heaven Hill produces this bourbon for another company that beats them at their own entry at this level. I think the 90 proof is a huge plus and the label advertises that extensively. By not being diluted for increased output they can deliver more flavor from each barrel.

My next bottom shelf try is going to be Virgin 7year 101. Also Sourced from Heaven Hills. Goes for around the same as the Brooks.

What a nice surprise this one turned out to be! For an everyday price of $13 (and often on sale for less) this is one of the best bargains I've found of late. Finally decided to give it a try after the "rebranding" with upgraded packaging and cork closure. Pleasant nose with sweet vanilla and oak, balanced with a nice leathery note. Sweet upfront on the palate, followed by baking spices before transitioning to oak on the back end. Slightly clingy leaving honey, vanilla and mint with a little char on the palate after a smooth warming finish. I agree with Tango that this bests EW Black and JB White for a few dollars less. It is even approaching EW BIB territory for me (which is really saying something). This is definitely going to become a staple in my cabinet.

KaiserSoze (2017-02-13):
I’ve had this before but it was a few years back. Drank it over ice and in an old fashioned. From what I recall, very similar tasting to JD Old No. 7. With you and Tango giving it above average marks and with it being so affordable, I’ll have to revisit this one.

BDanner (2017-02-13):
With that packaging, it seems they are definitely trying to appeal to the JD drinker.

Tango (2017-02-22):
I like Ezra Brooks 90 proof , but it is not as good as Evan Willams Bottled in Bond

BDanner (2017-02-23):
No argument here. I said it was entering that territory, but it's not the same zip code...

Ezra Brooks 90 proof is classic quality. It beats its rivals Jim Beam White and Black Label or Evan Williams Black Label hands down with no contest.Nose is rich with spice, oak, vanilla.and caramel. Entry is smooth with deep oak, vanilla, spice, and caramel ending with honey , oak , and vanilla

Thanks for the review. I've been on the fence about trying this one, but it's on sale for $13 this month. I'll have to give it a shot.

Cranecreek (2017-02-17):
If both you and BDanner liked this-looks like I will have to give it a try !

Yeah, as good as the others three times the price. Got it for $10 in NH (750mL). Good everyday sipper.

This is much better than JD; where JD has a slightly smoky, stale hazel nut flavor (all that's left after they filter all the flavor out of it in search of "smooth," whatever the hell that means), EB90 has a rich, full, slightly sweet caramel flavor, a little floral/fruit on the nose and the follow through, and a silky mouth feel. At less than than half JD's price, there is absolutely no comparison. And I can't wait to try Old Ezra (101 proof and 7 years old). (Addendum: Alas, Old Ezra was discontinued before I ever got a chance to try it.)

Two words: Hell Yes I prefer this to most other moderate range whiskey like JD or JB and personally I find it to be somewhat smoother. The extra proof and lower price tag seal the deal

Like the previous reviewer said; this is a J D's clone. If you like J D, you should love this . Same flavor 1/2 the price. I prefer Elijah Craig or Beam Black so I'm not a fan. But like I said If you like JD you'll love this.

A friend of mine saw this at our local store a couple years ago and decided to give it a try, and I'm thankful he did. Ezra tastes similar to JD black label, but is a bit smoother and doesn't have that kick that Jack is known for; all while being stronger (90 proof as opposed to JD's 80 proof). Also, in my opinion, Ezra mixes better than Jack. It complements everything I've tried it with so far, as opposed to dominating the flavors like Jack, which means I can add more of it. As a result, I don't buy Jack anymore, unless I'm at a bar. Is it top shelf? No. Grab a bottle of Booker's or Knob Creek for that. But at $15 it is a great alternative to Jack, and even Beam black label.
