Proof66 Notes

The Famous Grouse was first blended by Matthew Gloag in 1896 named for the "iconic Scottish bird." After some success, he demed the term "Grouse Blend" too plain and he added the adjective "famous" in 1905. The label was acquired by Highland distillers in 1970.

I need to do a side by side tasting with this and Dewar's (which is the Scotch I normally stock in my bar). From memory I find it to be similar. It's a little sweeter on the entry with malt and dark chocolate. Old leather and smoke make a mid-palate appearance. It's a little hotter on the finish than Dewar's, which I actually like. In fact, it seems to take everything I like about Dewar's and turn it up a notch. And it's a couple dollars cheaper to boot. I think this one will become my new "everyday" scotch.

Very smooth, light scotch. Highly recommended to new drinkers or as a mixer. Can be drank on it's own well also, although some might find the flavor a little too light if they are used to other scotches. My go to everyday blended scotch and can be found for $20 here which for me bumps it from a 4 star to a 5 for value.

A refreshing, non smokey scotch blend. This stuff is easy to drink and is easy on the wallet. There is quite a bit of cocoa, orange peel, and malt on the palate. It is a good blend for those who want to sit back and enjoy a blend on the rocks. Get a bottle if you don't have one, trust me and scotland (where it's the number one blend), this is one you should stock you bar with.

Round and pleasant taste. Quite different compared to usual scotch blends. This is not smoky and powerful kind of bird, instead it comes near you and eats from your hand. If you understand what I try to mean...
