Proof66 Notes

Four Roses bourbon—the yellow label—is their flagship bourbon and bottled at 80 proof. It's made from a blend from all 10 of their signature recipes (comprising 2 mashbills and 5 different yeast srains), all of which could be classified as "high rye" styles of bourbon.

Four Roses Distillery prides itself on owning five proprietary strains of yeast that produce ten distinct recipes. The name of the distillery and their bourbon comes from founder Paul Jones Jr and his marriage proposal: a yes meant she would wear a rose to the dance and--in true legendary form--she wore four in a corsage. The brand itself--according to a brief write-up in the January, 2013 edition of Tasting Panel Magazine--was founded in the 1930s (with roots as far back as 1888) to be bought by Seagram in 1943. Seagram pulled the brand from the US market in the 1960s and it wasn't reborn until 1994 at the hands of Master Distiller Jim Rutledge, who in his words: "Seagram's destroyed the brand, and we had to overcome that perception. In a way it's been fun, but in a way it's been a challenge." Today, the brand is owned by Kirin Brewery of Japan who acquired Four Roses in 2002.

From Four Roses, I was expecting more flavor. Its OK, but nothing interesting about it.

A good basic bourbon. Although I mostly drink neat, I do mix some Old Fashioneds once in a while, and this will be my go-to bourbon for mixed drinks until the bottle is empty. Then back to Buffalo Trace. However, Four Roses Small Batch and Single Barrel are among my favorites for straight-up bourbon flavor.

I rated this Yellow Label as 2 stars. Which is a GOOD RATING because this is entry level Bourbon and I am comparing it in "stars" across the whole range of Bourbons. Four Roses makes some seriously good products and the base tastes of those Bourbons are evident in here as well. No surprise as it's the same Bourbon just bottled earlier and diluted down to the barely legal minimum of 40% ABV. With alcohol dilution you also get diluted flavors and character. Every major distiller has a product in this entry level offering. There is market share and brand recognition to be obtained here. But at the $20.00 and under level it's going to be near impossible to find 4 and 5 star Bourbon. (with one exception.) This Yellow Label is mildly sweet with light wood and good Rye in the mix. Some of the more exotic flavors are present but very subdued and hard to identify. As with most 80 proof Bourbon any further dilution with water or ice and it flattens out to be very bland. Oh, and the exception at the $20.00 price break ? Evan Williams "Single Barrel" Vintage Bourbon.

This is a very decent, easily drinkable bourbon available at a very good price. I seem to mostly see love it or hate it reviews here, which I suspect is due to a relatively unusual flavor profile. Typically a decent cheap bourbon will be sweet and smooth but kind of bland, without much complexity in the rye spice department. A bad cheap bourbon (like say Beam White Label) might be spicier, but at the expense of tasting gross, and burning a lot, and of course a really good (and more expensive) bourbon might be sweet, spicy, and smooth all at once (Woodford Reserve, Four Roses Single Barrel, Old Forester Signature, Blanton's), but Four Roses Yellow label is sweet, spicy, and smooth, but under-wooded, something I've certainly never experienced in another bourbon. This is a pretty decent flavor profile. I get a significant (yet somehow completely gentle) rye spice, sweetness, a hint of vanilla, and that's it pretty much it. You can smell the wood and caramel in the nose, but I can't taste it at all. I'd guess this is due to the low proof, relatively young age (I'd bet its almost exactly 4 years), and the large amount of rye in the mash bill (in total probably about 28%). The end result is a bourbon that I find perfectly pleasant, and nearly as smooth to drink as water, though its not super interesting. I'd say it slightly more interesting than Evan Williams (though I would say that since I usually like some extra rye in the mash bill), and so I like this one and unload on the other love-it-or-hate-it high rye inexpensive bourbon, Bulleit (which has the wood Four Roses Yellow label is missing, but lacks the sweetness). Probably the cheapest bourbon that I think is best served neat, this is a solid 3.5 stars, but I'm not rounding up because I just can't bare to post this as a 4 star rating. This is easy to recommend for anyone looking to sip bourbon neat without breaking the bank. It usually costs $20 where I am.

I've been trying to find this one, but apparently North Carolina has stopped stocking it. All I can get here are the 4 Roses Small Batch (not bad) and the Four Roses Single Barrel (which I love).

Bought this to make Old Fashioned's & Mint Juleps because of higher rye content and was very pleased overall. Also very tasty neat. Lots of different flavors working well together here even for a light 80 proof spirit. Will buy again.

I wasnt too blown away by this bourbon, maybe its just me. Very thin, dare I say astringent-oily feel? Strong bite, some sweet notes of sugar and caramel come through. Finish is quite hot, definitely the rye. Bought a bottle for 20 bucks and, to be quite honest, tastes like-maybe-a 25 dollar bourbon.

The nose and immediate flavors are honeyed caramel. The palate and finish on this bourbon are thinner and more short lived than the upscale versions. The crackling rye spice on the finish is a delight. It also mixes well and particularly makes a great Old Fashioned. Great bourbon!

for the price point this is the one of the best values in bourbon. A great bourbon for those who feel that bourbon is too sweet as the rye content is just enough to remove the edge from the sweetness of the corn

My introduction to whiskey was through Scotch. I like flavorful and smooth elixirs. This fits the bill. Some claim "too light", but is that perhaps code for "doesn't burn your throat and have weird aftertastes"? This whiskey is unapologetically smooth, but also flavorful within rational confines. I inadvertently discovered a wonderful accompanyment. As a desert or super duper nightcap, pour a couple of jiggers neat and enjoy a few yogurt raisins in the side. No foolin', you will be pleased.

This has always been on my list to have. To be honest I thought it was just average, nothing special.

Tastes like bourbon mixed 50:50 with water. Weak taste, no complexity. I like me some cheap bourbon, but not this one.

I've yet to.try a Four Roses product that isn't fantastic, and this one is no exception. Certainly not as complex as their small batch or single barrel, but for $17 a bottle, there is not earthly way you'll beat this. It has a nice sweet taste in the mouth. A little warmth going down and a.slight more aftertaste than more expensive 4R PRODUCTS. But again, you'll never beat this price

Great for cocktails like an old fashioned. $30 a handle! Not my favourite straight. The distillery has relatively affordable higher end whiskeys and the yeast is selected and cultivated on site. Owned by Kirin brewery.

A sweet vanilla aroma leads to a surprisingly dry taste. A lot of spice on the finish, but not a lot of complexity. Four Roses knows how to make bourbon, but this, their basic expression, doesn't do much for me. If you're not a fan of the sweeter bourbons, you should give this a try.

A very tasty bourbon. Great on the rocks. Comes on like a normal bourbon but has a surprising spicy finish.
