Proof66 Notes

Four Roses Single Barrel bourbon is bottled at a higher strength than their flagship brand at 100 proof.

Four Roses Distillery prides itself on owning five proprietary strains of yeast that produce ten distinct recipes. The name of the distillery and their bourbon comes from founder Paul Jones Jr and his marriage proposal:

Easily a 5 star. My bottle says OBSV Aged to 7 years 10 months-bottled in January 2015 This bottle I have is 100 proof and labeled as "Private Barrel". This Private barrel is taste wise the same as 100 proof Single Barrel. This is exceptional Bourbon and where "Small Batch" is fair on it's own, Single barrel adds richer, more complex tastes along with the 100 vs. 90 proof. US Spirits review below describes the taste very well. I will add in "chocolate covered Orange sticks" and Buckwheat pancakes ! I also note the cherry flavor-like a chocolate covered cherry. The sweetness is correct and the Rye adds spiciness but not overly so.

Possibly my favorite bourbon nose and exceptionally complex, especially for the price. Don't get me wrong, this is great stuff, but I'm not in love with it as much as others. About 10 minutes resting in the glass with a splash of water really helps open it up. Seems to be getting a loyal following and becoming harder and harder to find.

I bought this one on sale a while back because it came with a couple free rocks glasses. Decided to try it this weekend. This one runs about $40 in my neck of the woods. Nice bottle, with heavy wooden stopper. Your barrel is listed right on the front of the label. Great nose with heavy caramel and a hint of char. Tried neat, it has a great entry on the palate. All the good stuff from the nose is there. Heavy dose of toffee sweet. Great thick mouth feel. Where this one lost me was on the finish. Instead of leaving the sweet smoky notes on the palate, it seemed to burn them away. However, when tried on the rocks, the finish was as smooth as butter leaving the pleasant sweetness behind. While I was enjoying this, I kept asking myself if I enjoyed it $10 more than my Evan Williams SB. They are different, with the EW being "earthier", but my enjoyment was pretty much equal and the EW was $10 less. I'm now looking forward to trying the Small Batch ($30) and the Yellow Label ($20)...4 Stars for a very good bourbon.

An excellent, nuanced, well balanced bourbon. Fairly dry, particularly for a bourbon. The flavors are muted and balanced- making this an excellent sipper but not particularly good for a mixed drink (the price is a tad higher than I would want for a mixing bourbon anyway). Lots of fruit in the taste with some bitter wood, somewhat reminiscent of a nice brandy. A bit of spice as well- mostly clove to my taste and a very light touch of vanilla, and some sour notes. The favors come through regardless of watering, but without a few drops of an ice cube the alcohol does burn a little bit on the way down- though not so much that I consider the ice or water necessary. The tag here says heavy char- I got basically no discernible char in my bottle. Reading some others' thoughts on this, it seems to vary a bit between bottlings- I am on my first bottle. At ~$40 a bottle, this is a great deal.

Cranecreek (2016-09-20):
I beleve that this is one of the best bourbons available-it packs alot of flavors and complexity as you noted. For me it is best as a "fireplace" sipper, as it has so much going on I'm not too sure it lends itself well to being mixed. I think a little dilution helps take the intense flavors down a notch. (see Bulleit 10 year) A superb sipper!

I'm not quite sure if the Single Barrel version of Four Roses if for everyone because this is made from an extremely high rye mash (35% or a bit more I think) but the bottle I got is definitely for me. This has both a very complex nose and taste. In the nose I can get everything from leather to wood, to vanilla, in the taste I get rye spice, yeast/ fresh bread, dark fruit (I can usually pick up a bit of cherry), wood (though very little char), and frequently this seems like its going to be totally dry like Bulleit, but then at the very end the sweetness kicks in with a hint of Vanilla. Four Roses Single Barrel is potentially dangerous as its also so smooth it can be almost impossible to believe its 100 proof. Age is not listed, but rumored to be 8 or maybe 10 years when I ask google. My serving suggesting for this one is basically to drink it neat. It is also good over ice, but it is so smooth I don't personally feel ice to be necessary. I have played with this a bit as a mixer as well (for which I feel a bit guilty now), but the high proof and high rye, and generally spicy and assertive nature of this bourbon means this tends not to play well with others. The one cocktail I WOULD use this in again is a Manhattan, but even there it wasn't my favorite (surprisingly, there I found it not quite as smooth as my ryes, even Rittenhouse). Anyway I think this is a great representative of a top shelf bourbon, it would be worthwhile at almost any price, but (in my area at least) is pretty widely available and usually for not too much money (I've seen it on sale for as little as $37). When I first found proof66, this, and not Knob Creek was listed as the highest "expert scored" bourbon, and I personally feel like the experts had those 2 spirits scored more accurately 2 years ago. Easy Five out of Five stars one of my top 5 bourbons to date, and even though I'm not convinced everyone will love a 30+% rye bourbon, its something absolutely everyone should try at least once in a bar, and probably still a good blind bottle buy for anyone who wants to explore bourbon because if you do like it, this will probably become a favorite.

Update: I read a few glowing reviews of this bourbon on some other sites and saw this on sale at the store so I decided to give it a second chance (my first bottle was lacking). Wow, what a dramatic difference there is between this bottle and the first; it seems like a completely different bourbon. The first bottle was like listening to your favorite song with two of the instruments missing, whereas this bottle is like getting a private performance by the band of that favorite song. This Four Roses SB is intense, full bodied, full flavored, well balanced, and crisp. I didn't buy this close to home, but tomorrow I'm going to make a special trip back to where I got it so I can get a couple more bottles from the same barrel.

I am a Scotch drinker, but this is one of the very few bourbons that I will buy. Very smooth. Light sweetness but enough alcohol and oak frame to keep it from being cloying. Vanilla, honey, baking spice hints. Great partner to a good cigar and, oddly enough, something makes me think this would be a good chaser for Bananas Foster, to get the sugar out of your throat.

I recently went to the Bourbon Distiller's Annual Gala in Kentucky and tasted about 18 different bourbons and ryes in one night, all of which were single barrel, small batch, or extra aged. After getting through things like Maker's 46, Michter's 10yr Rye, Blanton's, Woodford, Knob, Elijah 12yr, Parker's etc, this one was the clear standout in my mind. Standing out among 18 others is a tall order, but this bourbon did it and has done every time I've had it since then. Sipping it neat gives you some burnt sugar, campfire smell, leather, and apricot. A dab of water really smooths it out and gives a ton of different tastes including a little vanilla and some black cherry. I will try new bourbons any time I see something interesting at a bar... more often than not I will follow it up with one of these so that I can close the experience out on some Four Roses Single Barrel.

As a matter of personal taste, this one didn't do it for me. I agree with the review of Muncher. An open bottle for a couple of weeks and an ice cube or two certainly improved it, however.

4.15/5; For 100 proof it's quite smooth with very nice delicate floral notes to contrast the typical mild heat/spice associated with bourbons. I liked it a lot at first but currently it isn't really in my rotation. It is certainly different than a lot of bourbons & worth a try

Very nice intense combination of flavors--caramel, light old leather, but especially floral and fruit. In fact, I was a little put off by the intensity of the flavors until I added a small splash of water. Then they really opened up. I wish I could afford to drink this every day.

Drinking it neat as I first did leaves no doubt that it is 100 proof...fire on the lips, tongue and throat. I was initially disappointed because I generally like bourbon a little smoother. But adding a splash of water (no ice for me) completely changes the character for the better. It adds a sweetness on the palate and makes it much smoother going down the hatch. I can't say it's the absolute best as it's ranking implies (i actually like Four Roses Small Batch just as well) but it's definitely in my Top 5.

Sips well, even uncut with water. The flavors really show up though with a splash or two of water. A great balance of sweetness, splash, and mild floral notes. The review below that notes the ability of the flavors to "play well with one another" hit the essence of this spirit on the head.

Great bourbon. Should be rated highly. Sweet and well rounded. Much better than their Small Batch. Dont let the 100 proof scare you. Melt one cube in it and youre hard pressed to find a much better sipper. Great flavors! Natty rules!

From the opening sip, it's an explosion on the palate, with many tastes circling around each other. There's vanilla and fruit (cherry maybe?), along with honey and a little spice. It's very well balanced, with the different flavors playing together nicely. It's a strong whiskey and has a long finish to it. It's not overpowering, but it's a spirit you'll want to take your time with, so you can still taste and enjoy the various flavors.
