Proof66 Notes

George Dickel Rye was first launched in 2012 and, unlike typical Tennessee whisky that goes through a charcoal "mellowing" rather than traditional aging, the rye whisky spends at least 5 years in barrels prior to "mellowing" and bottling. The grain bill is said to be 95% rye and 5% malted barley, which we take to mean an intense, spice-rye flavor suitable for the classic American cocktails such as a Manhattan or Old Fashioned.

We've confirmed what a few different blogs suggest: the rye spirit itself is sourced from Indiana (which leads us to believe Lawrenceburg Indiana Distillers or LDI--the source of a lot of rye whiskey—see, for example, Chuck Cowdery's report). The Tax and Trade Bureau has the the source listed as Diageo in Connecticut as the source but we're told this is an error and LDI (now known as MGP) is indeed the source.

George Dickel Tennessee whiskies are made with a mash bill (whose proportions are secret) of barley, rye, and corn. Blended down with limestone water from Cascade Hollow, the whiskey is "mellowed" through sugar maple charcoal, double distilled, and then aged in oak. One of their signature processes is to chill-filter the spirit before the charcoal mellowing, which they say creates a special smoothness to their whisky. Note that the distillery has opted to spell whisky without the "e" in defiance of American whiskey tradition (and we'll follow suit here). The label is owned by Diageo.

I have been trying some Rye whiskey as of late and this Dickel along with Jim Beam and Knob Creek are on the list. Years ago I had Rittenhouse & Bulleit , the Rittenhouse I liked not so much on the Bulleit. But this review is about George Dickel Rye. They are very transparent about their source for this Rye (MGPI) and I can taste the resemblance to Bulleit which has the same source. Nothing against MGP but their 95% rye recipe just does not do it for me. This Dickel is different from the Bulleit probably because of aging and the filtering. I found this whiskey to be very smooth with good Rye notes and Vanilla, but no discernible Oak. What I did get was Spearmint & good amount of an herbal quality. A bit too much of both for me. It was like "Long Island Tea" now some may really like that, but there was not enough barrel influence for my taste. (could be the filtering).

A very nice, dry rye. I was not as blown away as I expected based on the rating here, but it is good stuff nonetheless and the price is extremely good. It is not sweet as in Saz, but is more along the lines of a Wild Turkey rye in sweetness. The flavors seemed more fresh and perhaps even herbal than the typical spiciness found in rye. I think this is my go to for a dry rye- I like it much more than Turkey (which itself is not bad). Good neat, mixed, or wherever but I would generally prefer a more sweet whiskey if drinking straight.

one of the first ryes I tasted . a brawny brash monster of a rye, if you ask me ... perhaps a bit too brash but, good for mixing, at that rate and it's not the lighter/sweeter style of rye that is out there ... a non-p.c. F-U if you don't like me, kind of rye . 8^D

Very nice rye. I picked this up on sale for 18 and will make sure to get more. Fantastic for mixing in cocktails or just sipping neat. If I had a choice between this and baby Saz I would pick the Dickel rye 8 out of 10 times. This just has more Rye spice then Saz.

A very solid rye. I really dig the mint and fresh dill nose and taste - very unique. The finish is surprisingly sweet, but in a good way. Makes a great old fashioned. I slightly prefer Rittenhouse BIB and Bulleit, but I will definitely buy again.

Sourced where some other ryes are sourced. GD is up front about that. It is very good, and has the nose and palate difference from the filtering and longer ageing in oak. Not as sweet as Redemption Rye, but this stuff is tasty. I won't say harsh, but "brighter" than Redemption - more like whisky. The price is holding in spite of the increasing demand for Rye products. The GD 12 is also a favorite sippin whisky.

As good as any rye I've had to date. Very clean and balanced. Oak and mint on the nose. Oak, mint, vanilla, and a mild frosting like sweetness on the palate. I like it better than Bulleit and it's a toss up with the Sazarac 6 year. Well worth the price.

Pretty much all rye here - very tasty in an Old Fashioned. If it were under $20 it would be a no-brainer to keep in your bar.
