Proof66 Notes

Glenfiddich 12yr is the flagship and "pioneer" expression as well as being the largest selling single-malt scotch in the world. It's aged in both European and American oak.

Glenfiddich Distillery was built with the "bare hands" of William Grant and his nine (nine!) sons in 1886. The distillery is independently owned by William Grant & Sons who also own the labels for Balvenie, Grant's blended scotch, Hendrick's Gin, and are also co-owners of the Highland Brands, which include The Famous Grouse, The Macallan, Highland Park, Black Bottle, and Gloag's London Dry. Today, Glenfiddich is the best-selling brand of single-malt scotch in the world. Glenfiddich is pronounced with a hard "-ck-" sound at the end like the "ick" in "icky." The word is translated from Gaelic as "valley of the deer."

Being a solid benchmark Single Malt, this whisky is easy accessible to the beginner. Green apples and other fruits dominate the nose, while Glenfiddich 12 tastes sweet, malty and harmonic. Its rather light character combines with a hint of oak and a slight bitterness in the finish. Unfortunately, there are some rough edges in the background of this spirit, presumably due to high demand for casks. After all, Glenfiddich 12 is the best-selling Single Malt whisky in the world. It's a warmly recommended Speysider that offers a practical introduction to malt whisky! RATING: 3.3/5.0 ≙ 84 pts

A nice pear flavor all around with a bit of sweet finish. The only thing is, I find it unusually HOT for a 12 yr old scotch. There is a harshness I just can't get over with this whiskey that I usually associate with a bit higher proof bourbon . A bit of water goes along way .

Slàinte Mhath (2016-04-27):
High demand for this Single Malt certainly requires to use most casks available - also the not so good ones. Hence, there are some rough edges to be found in Glenfiddich 12. Supply and demand are taking their toll.

Nice but not too deep Whisky. I like the soft and smooth vanilla body, but it should be a bit more intense. The rest is mainstream - hints of vanilla wood, but not too much, hints of pepper and a not too soft alcoholic background. The aftertaste is round and smooth with sharp hints, not too deep vanilla wood, soft caramel. Nice, but all the flavours could be a bit more intense. 3½ stars here.

Light and refreshing. Makes a great Spring/Summer scotch. Pear and crisp green apple are easily detectable. Doesn't quite have the same "pop" as the Glenlivet 12 - missing that nice cinnamon spice. Definitely not bad, but probably won't buy again.

The Budweiser of single malts. Very drinkable. I have a Japanese client who mixes this with diet coke.

Defnitely oak there. Wood. Finish is definitely short. Something of a tang appears. A sweet or fruity something appears on the nose. Water brings out a sweetness, but it's not strong. Pear opens up and becomes a lot more prominent

I've been avoiding this one because it's so mass produced and so common that I thought there's no way it's any good. My mistake. I guess there's a reason they sell so much of it. It's just as good, if not better, than any of the scotches that are similar to it (Glenmorangie 10, GlenGrant 16, Tomatin, Glenlivet, Glengoyne, Old Pulteney.............) that I've had. I would bet that if you gave a glass of it blindly to any of the previous reviewers and had them try it without knowing what it was there would be a dramatic increase in the average Rabble Rating for this malt.

Slàinte Mhath (2016-04-27):
Not sure if Glenfiddich 12 would score better in a blind tasting. It's made to please everyone, but it is lacking character and complexity - two attributes that are being appreciated by the experienced pallet.

3.6 stars solid, light-fruity taste, nothing exciting but also nothing too harsh.

For me it's more flavorful and more complex than its popular competitor glenlivet 12. For a 12 it's a nice solid pour and one to favor at bars. For a bottle at home I find the 15 to be more my speed but this is nice enough for the bar scene. It's a touch of smokey oak and I found it smooth enough. Certainly worth a try

Slàinte Mhath (2016-04-27):
Comparing Glenfiddich 12 and Glenlivet 12 is interesting. The Glenlivet has a greater complexity on the nose, while the finish is rather underwhelming. Glenfiddich is less complex but it gives a better finish. Personally, I prefere Glenlivet, but both spirits are certainly not far from each other.

Nice quality but not too smooth because of the age. Tastes like the 15 but not as smooth as the 15. Has the fruit and minimal wood flavor.

Its ok. Im a newbie to scotch but Ive tasted better. It hits a bit strong on the first sit. I prefer a smoother tasting Scotch like Belvenie 15 yr single barrel.

It's meant to please a broad spectrum, so of course Glenfiddich 12 is rather boring to the advanced pallet. Try Glenfiddich 15 Solera, it is much better than the basic entry level!

Better than a lot of other single malts. A good one to open during a party to impress people.

It hits you hard, not the smoothest but after the first sip it begins to roll down your palliate. The flavor is bold and i think its good value for money

A cheaper alternative to Glenlivet. When you just can't bring yourself to spend another $15 for Glenlivet, Glenfiddich is a suitable alternative. Not quite as smooth as Glenlivet, but close enough.
