Proof66 Notes

The Glenfiddich 15yr is aged in all three sherry casks, American bourbon casks, and new oak. It is then placed in the "solera vat," which is always kept half-full and allows the different whiskies to "marry."

Glenfiddich Distillery was built with the "bare hands" of William Grant and his nine (nine!) sons in 1886. The distillery is independently owned by William Grant & Sons who also own the labels for Balvenie, Grant's blended scotch, Hendrick's Gin, and are also co-owners of the Highland Brands, which include The Famous Grouse, The Macallan, Highland Park, Black Bottle, and Gloag's London Dry. Today, Glenfiddich is the best-selling brand of single-malt scotch in the world. Glenfiddich is pronounced with a hard "-ck-" sound at the end like the "ick" in "icky." The word is translated from Gaelic as "valley of the deer."

Compared to the mass-produced 12-year-old Single Malt, Glenfiddich 15 Solera Vat is definitely a step up in quality. Rich and delicate fruitiness dominates the nose, in particular ripe apples, banana and grapes. Fresh spiciness and sherry cask influence add to the complexity of the malt. On the palate, the fruity notes are more subdued. Vanilla cream and honey sweetness are complemented by mild spices, most notably cinnamon. The finish is moderately long, bittersweet and spicy but not very substantial. High demand for oak casks unfortunately takes its toll. RATING: 3.8/5.0

Much better than the 12yr old. There's a deeply divided sweet and spice conversely battling each other in this scotch. Still though, I find it a bit hot. Well balanced but not so sure I don't detect more spice than smoke. Even with a small amount of water, hard to tell the difference between spice and heat. Not up to what I would expect from a Glenlivett or McCallan of this age.

Extremely smooth, you can taste the sherry upon the introduction. Has a very nice combination of mild spice with a hint of peat. This is a beautiful scotch with a complexity of 18 year old spirit. This is my go to scotch for any occasion.

*Nice and round, full-bodied Whisky. Vanilla wood, hints of pepper, smooth ad round. But not as intense soft as the 18 year old one. The pepper lies over the vanilla wood, hints of caramel, very great. The aftertaste is long and full of wood, vanilla, peppery hints and caramel there. Really nice!

Awesome stuff! Very complex yet very smooth. All the flavors meld together perfectly. Just like many others have mentioned, this needs to be bottled at a higher ABV - my only knock on this otherwise beautiful single malt. Miles better than the 12 year old and not a big price difference.

Wow, nobody nails the tasting notes of their whisk(e)ys quite like Glenfiddich. I thought they were spot on with the 18, and they're spot on with the 15 as well. On the nose I/they get heather honey, vanilla fudge, and dark fruits. On the palate I/they get sherry oak, almonds and sugar (marzipan), and cinnamon. On the finish the sweetness lingers, which is unique because it's usually oak and/or spice that lingers most prominently. I got my bottle on sale for $39.99, so it's definitely worth what I paid, but like many other spirits I wish it was at a higher ABV; 43 or 46% would be perfect.

I absolutely agree with your criticism. Single Malts above the 10- or 12-year-old entry level should have a higher ABV. If the whisky was natural color and no chill filtered, it would be even better. Unfortunately, some distilleries stick to their old habits of 40% ABV, addition of E150a and intense chill-filtration...

WOW! talk about a well rounded flavorful scotch. Very impressive. Big step up from Glenfiddich 12yr and so much better that the Glenlivet line. A top speyside scotch. Very impressed.

I'm not too familiar with scotch right now, but this is by far the best I've had. Little bit of water really opened up the flavor.

Not that I'm an expert on whisk(e)y (I don't have the cash to be), but out of the 40 or so whisk(e)y's I've had, this was the best. had it with a few drops of spring water, it was awesome.

4.15/5; I love this catagory/value/price range. It's cheap enough to warrant repeat purchases at 50-60 dollars a bottle but it's extremely smooth with a high quality flavor profile oaky, with a gentle finish. These are the kind of value bottles that are great for serving around friends (most will like). One of the top 3 in the price range imo & definitely worth trying if you haven't yet.

Great Value for scotch. Fruit, floral, smooth, a very nice 15 and very similar to the 18.

VERY GOOD STUFF... Reminds me a little of bushmills 16 from color to taste. Much better than the 12 year in my opinion worth the extra 15 to 20 bucks. Fruity but elegant . YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED .

Starts out on the nose with notes like an apple brown betty; cinnamon, brown sugar, and apples. Very sweet on the palate -- almost Irish Mist sweet, which is, for me, too sweet, with notes of pineapple and more brown sugar. I like sweet things, but straight Scotch should not come off like a dessert topping.

Just bought a bottle from work tonight. Very fruity, with just enough smokiness to remind you it is Scotch. Along with Oban 14, this is now a favorite of mine among single malts.

I feel reluctant to rate this too highly because of my relative inexperience with scotch, but this is the best liquor Ive ever tasted. Two cubes of ice and few minutes is all you need. I have long preferred bourbon and scoffed at scotch guys, because my experience with scotch had been limited to JW Red. No more. I am excited to try more scotches now because of this one. Im rating it five because it demands that you take it slowly and evaluate it - this will last. I know what scotch can be because of this bottle, and my score reflects that. Ive never been happier with an alcohol purchase.

I recommend to try without the ice cubes and give the dram at least an hour in the glass (instead of a few minutes), and you will experience an even better malt moment!

Very smooth and tasteful drink. No dominance of any kind in flavours. It lasts a while in your mouth, but not too long. Price is good value for money.

A interesting complex and slightly challenging single malt especially for its relative cheapness. A safe, solid choice and a good buy for someone seeking something beyond their usual dram and not wanting to risk a lot of money. There is enough complexity and flavor for most with nothing too striking to be off putting in terms of style/taste. Good, interesting and unlikely to offend would be another way of putting it. Recommended.
