Proof66 Notes

The Glenfiddich 18yr "Ancient Reserve" scotch is matured in both American oak and Spanish Oloroso sherry.

Glenfiddich Distillery was built with the "bare hands" of William Grant and his nine (nine!) sons in 1886. The distillery is independently owned by William Grant & Sons who also own the labels for Balvenie, Grant's blended scotch, Hendrick's Gin, and are also co-owners of the Highland Brands, which include The Famous Grouse, The Macallan, Highland Park, Black Bottle, and Gloag's London Dry. Today, Glenfiddich is the best-selling brand of single-malt scotch in the world. Glenfiddich is pronounced with a hard "-ck-" sound at the end like the "ick" in "icky." The word is translated from Gaelic as "valley of the deer."

Still like other ages of this brand. Spicy sweet but much hotter than they should be with little to no help from water. I am most disappointed from this aging compared to older agings from Glenlivett and McCallan. At any age Glenfiddich reminds me of a whiskey that could use a little water and age.

The nose is smooth wood, soft vanilla with nice hints of caramel and wood. This Whisky starts soft and really full. Smooth body, lots of vanilla-wood, soft and round. Intense with soft caramel, smooth wood, vanilla and spices. The alcohol is very smooth, the Whisky is warming and the aftertaste is very soft. Vanilla, round and smooth wood, hints of caramel, ripe bananas, spices. Great and very long lasting. Fascinating great!

Most of the time I don't agree completely with the tasting notes from the distillery. This time I think they are spot on. Orchard fruit, baked apple, and oak on the nose. Dried fruit, dates, oak, and cinnamon on the palate. Refined and without anything that shouldn't be there. A very enjoyable pour.

4.15/5, nose is grassier than the 15. Mouth is less on orangy and tart apples and more on nutty and bitter chocolate than the fifteen. Finish is very moderate to short same length as 15. I can see why many people stick with the 15 now

Great flavor and smoothness. The 15 seemed to be just like this with smoothness and I din't notice a big difference in the flavor. Fruit dominates, molasses. Light wood.

Much lighter nose than the 15-year, with more savory and herbal elements. It's still pretty sweet, but the sweetness is better balanced -- it has notes of milk chocolate, caramel, and fig. Still a Scotch with a sweet tooth.

Elements of the taste of this one hint at much older scotch in the blending. Nice complexity and layers of flavors to this one, but still pleasant and easy to drink. Nicely done. A good choice and a easy to find bottle if you are looking for a 18 year old Single Malt.
