Proof66 Notes

The Glenlivet 12yr single malt scotch is the youngest expression and the flagship bottle of the distillery known the world over. When people say "Glenlivet," they usually mean this bottle. Based largely upon the 12yr, it is the second-highest seller globally in the single-malt category and the largest in the US. It is unpeated and considered accessible for the new scotch drinker. In our own guided tasting, they suggest adding a tiny bit of water to soften the flavor and balance the alcohol. One should taste fruity, floral, honey, and vanilla notes in the whisky.

The Glenlivet Distillery (note the use of the indefinite article "the" allowed by court decree in 1884) is the top-selling single malt scotch in the world. It is often considered the classic Speyside, producing unpeated (that is, non-smoky) scotch whisky. The name translates as "valley of the smooth flowing one." They are proud of their mineral rich water from "Josie's well" and their tall copper stills, producing lighter vapors for smoother, more buoyant whisky. The brand is owned by French-based Pernod-Ricard.

Once been the finest distillery of Scotland's Speyside, 'The' Glenlivet is still hanging in there. Its 12-year-old expression remains one of the best-selling Single Malts in the world and is a suitable alternative to Glenfiddich 12. Showing a surprising complexity, the nose is floral, fresh and delicate, emphasizing on pears and citrus fruits. On the palate, Glenlivet 12 is light and sweet, malty-fruity and easy to drink. Not a lot in the finish though: It's quick, mildly bitter and not very substantial. A classic and straightforward benchmark whisky without any edges or highlights. RATING: 3.4/5.0 ≙ 85 pts

Great entry level single malt or to scotch in general. Very fruity, floral, and light bodied with hints of vanilla. Finish is long and contains a lot of malt notes. Little to no peat or smoke. Not the most complex whisky flavor wise, but for ~$32 a bottle you can't beat it in terms of value.

Lower priced entry level single malt. Slightly medicinal in taste. Definitely serviceable. Adding a touch of water always helps to open up a scotch and this is no exception.

Solid three. Not a lot of taste but smooth with a hint of green apple. I add a few drops of water. Plus its only $30.

Closer to 3.5. A very easy drinking single malt - I can see why this is so popular, especially with it being so readily available. I really like big bold flavors, so this is a little bland for me. Enjoy this over Glenfiddich 12 but not as much as Glenmorangie 10.

3.5 : Very light and smooth, the taste is hard to distinguish, similar to Glenmorangie/Glenfiddich.

This is my go-to Single Malt. Affordable, smooth, a nice finish, and best of all, very kind to your head the next morning.

I completely agree with Quetzal. Sweet, light, and very easy to drink. I like the 15 year a little better and the 18 year a lot better. Worth the price though and a good scotch to start a newbie on.

Good scotch, and for the price it is one that everyone can have a bottle of, instead of some mediocre blend.

(3 out of 5). It's decent, but won't impress anyone unless they're new to scotch. It's pleasantly malty and fruity, but also very light- may be good for someone who likes Irish or Canadian whiskey. In the end I don't think it's that interesting, but it's also drinkable much cheaper than other scotches in its age range, and could be a good gateway malt.

I equate this scotch to drinking a light beer vs a regular. good first scotch for some as it has a very simple taste and is easy to drink on the rocks. Good taste for $30 value. Now on to the 18yr.

Not a bad scotch at all but rather light on flavor and very simple. Of the major 10-12 year non smokey single malts one encounters at bars I'd give the following rank from lowest to highest: glenlivet 12, glenfiddich 12, glenmorangie 10, macallan 12. That's just my 2 cents. Glenlivet 12 is worth a try to see if it suits your fancy, for me I find other options more compelling. I will end by adding that glenlivet 18 is truly stellar and a bottle worthy for the home bar.

The perfect balanced scotch for my tastes. Smoky, light fruit, mild sweetness.some days I go for a peatier scotch but this is what I think of when I think scotch. A great value for a single malt at $35.

Where did you find smoke in that Single Malt?

My first real scotch I ever had and I had it at The Glenlivet distillery in Scotland. Truly memorable and still one of my favorite scotches, even though Ive "graduated" to more peaty scotches now.

Mild aroma and flavor. Pleasant vapor with first inhale post sip. A good starter or safe choice for this spirit. Krashenberne

An every day scotch but still better than most on the market. The price isn't bad so it's a nice entry to the world of single malt. Agree with other comments that it's qutie lite in flavor, but that's a plus if you are again getting started with scotch.

Not very impressed about this one. Light floral summer whisky, but it's so light and easy that true single malt fan leaves asking more.

Not the fanciest or snootiest of the single malts by any stretch, but still my all time favorite Scotch. Glenlivet on the rocks continues to be my favorite drink. Smooth taste and I've never gotten a hangover from my old friend, Glen.
