Proof66 Notes

The Glenlivet 21yr single malt scotch is the second-oldest expression from the distillery. It is considered an "archive" whisky, meaning it is selected from specific barrels kept in a special portion of the warehouse. It is part of the sherry cask range, with a portion (we're told roughly 18%-20%) of the whisky aged in sherry casks and the remainder in American White Oak.

The best expression of Glenlivet that I've tried. Nice nose and richly developed sherry palate, the cask notes compliment and don't dominate. This one is abut $200 and I enjoyed a dram at a tasting. 4.5/5.0

Phizbin (2016-10-23):
I had a chance to try this at a tasting as well (I'd never drop that kind of coin on a bottle... I mean, I have but not sober and I've always had buyer's remorse). Anyway, I agree that it was outstanding. But my tasting was a vertical... we tasted all the Glenlivets right up the line. I thought that the Glenlivet 18 was within a whisker of being as good as the 21. And it's WAY cheaper. I've seen it at Costco for something like $60. So that's where I go, now.

The sherry cask finish has a nice influence here, but it's not overwhelming. It provides a perfect balance to the traditional "oak and smoke" that Glenlivet has perfected inside this bottle. If you get the opportunity to try this one, do not pass it up.

The sherry comes through with a mild nutty flavor accented with a butter toffee and slight sweetness. This is the oldest scotch I have had and as much as I enjoy the 15yr old Glenlivet I can't imagine that they could make any better than this no matter what the age. A rich and wonderfully enjoyable Scotch that is surprisingly easy to find.
