Proof66 Notes

Glenmorangie 12yr Lesanta is a sherry (Spanish Oloroso Sherry) cask finished whiskey. Marketing literature claims lasanta "warmth and passion" in Gaelic.

This is part of Glenmorangie's popular "Expressions" campaign that features several different specialty scotch whiskies finished in various methods.

"Glenmorangie" is Gaelic for "vale of big meadows" and the Glenmorangie Distillery traces its heritage far back before recorded history though the first mention occurred in 1738 with a brewery. The Glenmorangie Distillery was officially founded in 1843 and lays claim to the tallest stills in Scotland, measuring 16 feet, 10 inches (5.14 meters). They say this means only the purest vapors reach the top to condense in "purer more elegant whisky." They have made a point of owning the land around the distillery to ensure the purity of their water. As an added commitment to quality, they use their oak casks only twice and in this way believe that they are ensuring the maximum possible flavors from the wood. Their stills are run by the famous "16 Men of Tain." The distiller was owned by the MacDonald family until its very recent purchase by Moet-Hennessy in 2004. It produces an extraordinary range of different expressions with a great change in labels due to its recent change in ownership.

I'm with Irishman and Gerodim on this one, though a bit more enthusiastic. In short, this is Angles Envy done as an unpeated Scotch. There is no "challenge" here, nor is there meant to be any. This is very flavorful full bodied whiskey. It is very easy drinking over one cube of ice. Nothing "Sulfuric" about it.

I've never had a scotch so far that reminds me of coffee beans as much as this one does. It's interesting. Has the standard 10 year profile (fruit, citrus, cinnamon, and oak), but has coffee beans and toffee playing at a very noticeable volume too. I like it, just not as much as the 10 year and others in the "Expressions" collection.

This is a nice, smooth and interesting malt that is worth it's money. It's interesting nose and sweet taste make it ideal for people not very experienced in malt whiskeys.

This is an interesting one. What a great nose. Sweet sherried fruitiness with that Highland toffee and a hint of smoke. Mmmm. But then there is the Sulphur influence. A wee bit of water will help control the Sulphur and bring the fruity sweetness to the forefront.

This is finished in Oloroso sherry casks, bottled at 46% and non chill filtered. In theory, this should be the perfect enhancement to the standard 10 and so worth the extra cash... Well, the nose lives up to this expectation and is sweet, fruity, obviously sherried and reveals a nice spiciness too. The body on the other hand is a train wreck in the Channel Tunnel! It arrives with a sweet note but also a baseball bat of a sour sulphur note as well. It then develops medium pepper with a creamy mouth feel and some limited sweetness. So you think to yourself - ok it's getting better - but it's not. The finish gives you another punch of sour sulphur and it remains sour into the aftertaste as well! It's an awful example of a sherried whisky

My first scotch whisky. I got it because I heard it is what the average Scott drinks. I think it bites a bit, but a splash of water helps and keeps the bite from drowning out the flavors. Nice and spicy!

Not at all what I expected. Left a taste on my tongue for quite some time. Not one of my favorites.

The Glenmorangie 12 year is very nice. Has quite a bit more bite to it than the 10 year, but it's a good bite. :) Enjoy mine over a few ice cubes.
