Proof66 Notes

Glenmorangie claims the Quinta Ruban scotch is for "those who like to take the lead." This scotch is finished in Port wine casks from Portugal--"quintas" is the term for wine estate in Portugal. The port finish gives the scotch a reddish hue; hence the name "ruban," which is "ruby" in Gaelic.

This scotch is part of Glenmorangie's popular "expressions" campaign.

The 2011 Wine Enthusiast review found the port impact "minimal" creating a "shadow of a red berry flavor."

"Glenmorangie" is Gaelic for "vale of big meadows" and the Glenmorangie Distillery traces its heritage far back before recorded history though the first mention occurred in 1738 with a brewery. The Glenmorangie Distillery was officially founded in 1843 and lays claim to the tallest stills in Scotland, measuring 16 feet, 10 inches (5.14 meters). They say this means only the purest vapors reach the top to condense in "purer more elegant whisky." They have made a point of owning the land around the distillery to ensure the purity of their water. As an added commitment to quality, they use their oak casks only twice and in this way believe that they are ensuring the maximum possible flavors from the wood. Their stills are run by the famous "16 Men of Tain." The distiller was owned by the MacDonald family until its very recent purchase by Moet-Hennessy in 2004. It produces an extraordinary range of different expressions with a great change in labels due to its recent change in ownership.

Absolutely delicious. This one has fruit out the wazoo from the port wood, especially the dark dried fruits like prune plums. In the nose, the barrels themselves are evident, similar to that dank wine cellar aroma where some of the wine has dripped out on the floor and dried. The only (very minor) downside is a tannic, slightly bitter finish, but that does not affect my score in the least. I need to buy more...

I prefer the Lasanta offering to this version but a delicious single malt nonetheless. Full of flavor and very smooth. More like a 4.5. Can never go wrong with anything Glenmorangie.

I really haven't met a port finished whisk(e)y that I have not liked so far. This one is great. The oakiness of the 10 year plays very nicely with the dark fruits in the port finish. My favorite among the "Expressions" campaign offerings, but I still like the 10 year just a little bit better.

Wow was my first reaction to this. Mouth feel was very interesting and developed as I continued. Compared to Glenlivit 15 year I find this more up front and complex.
