Proof66 Notes

The Glenmorangie 25yr scotch is the oldest of the new principal expressions from the re-branded distillery. It comes in a beautiful cognac-like bottle. They claim it invokes fruit orchard flavors, "lavish chocolate" and even "sudden, icy clarity of fresh wild mint." And that's all in the aroma.

The 2011 Wine Enthusiast review found the packaging as enthralling as the whisky saying, "it feels precious even before it's opened."

"Glenmorangie" is Gaelic for "vale of big meadows" and the Glenmorangie Distillery traces its heritage far back before recorded history though the first mention occurred in 1738 with a brewery. The Glenmorangie Distillery was officially founded in 1843 and lays claim to the tallest stills in Scotland, measuring 16 feet, 10 inches (5.14 meters). They say this means only the purest vapors reach the top to condense in "purer more elegant whisky." They have made a point of owning the land around the distillery to ensure the purity of their water. As an added commitment to quality, they use their oak casks only twice and in this way believe that they are ensuring the maximum possible flavors from the wood. Their stills are run by the famous "16 Men of Tain." The distiller was owned by the MacDonald family until its very recent purchase by Moet-Hennessy in 2004. It produces an extraordinary range of different expressions with a great change in labels due to its recent change in ownership.

4.2/5, I'm a fan of glenmorangie but the higher up the line I go the less excited I get (due mostly to price). This is a very delicate and understated whiskey. Extremely light. I really couldn't get many (any of the tasting notes... Subtle fruit, berries and creme) so I can't go any higher than an 84 for the moment... Perhaps over a few more trial I'll discover more and change my mind but in general extremely subtle is not the way I like my whiskey. Those the love 'smooth' should find this right up their alley.
