Proof66 Notes

Glenmorangie Signet single malt is not marked with an age, though it is thought to be younger. It uses a chocolate malt mixed in with the barley making it a unique and "fun" whisky.

"Glenmorangie" is Gaelic for "vale of big meadows" and the Glenmorangie Distillery traces its heritage far back before recorded history though the first mention occurred in 1738 with a brewery. The Glenmorangie Distillery was officially founded in 1843 and lays claim to the tallest stills in Scotland, measuring 16 feet, 10 inches (5.14 meters). They say this means only the purest vapors reach the top to condense in "purer more elegant whisky." They have made a point of owning the land around the distillery to ensure the purity of their water. As an added commitment to quality, they use their oak casks only twice and in this way believe that they are ensuring the maximum possible flavors from the wood. Their stills are run by the famous "16 Men of Tain." The distiller was owned by the MacDonald family until its very recent purchase by Moet-Hennessy in 2004. It produces an extraordinary range of different expressions with a great change in labels due to its recent change in ownership.

Community Notes

From the Glenmorangie website:

A fusion of unique and rare elements, and clouded in secrecy, Signet is the culmination of a lifetime's experience. A blend of our oldest whisky - distilled over thirty years ago when malting still occurred on site – and spirit matured in a selection of the world's finest casks, this undoubtedly is the richest whisky in our range. Of course, whilst the exact secrets of its production are known only to our whisky creators, we can tell you that Signet's melting sweetness and explosive spiciness is, at least in part, caused by our unique roasted 'chocolate' barley malt and the 'designer casks' made bespoke for Glenmorangie from American white oak. Non chill-filtered.

The nose was so floral and beautiful that I just wanted to breathe it in for a while. I did finally get around to drinking it, and...wow. Elegant. Balanced. Kind of a 'greatest hits' of Scotch whisky; not too extreme in any direction, but rather a perfect middle ground of all the good things Scotch has to offer. I wish I could afford it, but it was a magnificent experience.
