Proof66 Notes

Grand Macnish Black Edition blended scotch is a lightly proofed blend where the "black label" indicates the aging of the scotch in heavy-char bourbon barrels (likely the "alligator" #4 char). This will give the whisky a deep, oak-driven flavor and finish with a presumably much lighter emphasis on the traditional malt-driven flavors of scotch. They call it a "bold and darker expression for Scotch enthusiasts."

Grand Macnish is named for Robert McNish who founded a blend in 1863 to be approachable and differentiated in the whisky market; the original blend is said to be composed of over 40 individual whiskies. The brand was family owned until 1927 when it was purchased by Corby Distilleries. The label was then eventually sold to MacDuff International in 1991. The "grand" in the title was an approbation from Robert McNish's friends in describing the fine quality of the scotch... the "a" in Macnish was inserted as a marketing effort to improve pronunciation in the rest of the international markets unused to the Scottish brogue.

MacDuff International was founded in Glasgow, Scotland in 1992 by Stewart MacDuff (who presumably lends his name to the company), Charles Murray, and Ted Thomson--themselves all veterans of the scotch industry. The company was formed to produce blends with the "personal touch" that were an homage to the heritage of Scotland.
