Proof66 Notes

Greenore is a label of "single grain" Irish whiskeys, which differs from "single malt" in that the latter is 100% barley while the former is 100% corn. The name comes from the port where corn grain was imported into Ireland. The corn grain provides a sweeter, lighter character to the whiskey than typical with malt whiskey. Please note, lacking its own category and wanting to distinguish it from malt whiskey, we opted to list it as a "blended whiskey." Greenore 8yr is a "single grain whiskey" and available only in limited quantities, with an initial run of 5,000 bottles.

UPDATE: Greenore 8yr has been re-branded as Kilbeggan 8yr Single Grain Whiskey. In order to avoid confusion, we've made a separate entry for that label.

Cooley Distillery launched in 1987 as the after converting a potato ethanol plant on the Cooley Peninsula by John Teeling. Their stated aim is to revive historical brands and traditional distilling of Irish whiskey. Cooley purchased several labels to give the new label credibility (Tyrconnel, fro example). They mature their whiskey at the site of Kilbeggan and today produce a wide range of different styles. In January, 2012, they were acquired by Beam, Inc (itself later acquired by Suntory) and became the Kilbeggan Distilling Company.

I really wanted to like this. I normally drink my whiskey neat, but I had to drink this on the rocks. It has a lot of bite and in very light on flavor. There are a lot of of whiskeys in this price range that I would choose over this.
