Proof66 Notes

Heaven Hill was founded shortly after Prohibition in 1934 specifically for making and selling bourbon. Today, it has become one of the largest bourbon producers in the world, owning and managing several of their own family of labels as well as some private label agreements. Their enormous inventory allows them great discretion in different bourbons in style and sophistication.

Heaven Hill Old Style Bourbon 3 year old is decent 3 year old value bourbon. The nose is cinnamon,, oak, and caramel. The entry is smooth with brief palate of spice. oak, caramel with short finish of oak and hint of honey.Henry McKenna Bourbon is 4 years old and much better than Heaven Hill Bourbon 3 year old for about the same money.Heaven Hill Old Style 4 year Bourbon was much better bourbon. One year makes a difference.

Like Storke, I'm actually reviewing a slightly different Heaven Hill that isn't yet listed on Proof66. (I have the 86 proof Black Label). I'm rating this at 4 stars. This is equal to the rating I gave to Wild Turkey 101 (actually verbally I call Turkey 101 4.5 stars, but I can't show that on the rating accompanying the review) and Jim Beam Black, and twice as good as the rating I gave to Gentleman Jack. Does this actually taste as good as Beam Black? Is it actually twice as good as Gentleman Jack? No. This only tastes ok, not great. I like it slightly better than its slightly more expensive stablemate Evan Williams Black Label. This is not really exciting, but pretty nicely balanced, kind of a poor man's Jack Daniels No 7 (Though actually slightly smoother). It has a nice caramel type sweetness that is well balanced by a dry woody char. Not much else going on. Not boring, but certainly not as deep or complex as Wild Turkey 101 or Beam Black let alone Four Roses Single Barrel, Knob Creek, Blanton's or Woodford Reserve. Why the 4 star rating then? The price! I paid $9.95 for a fifth of this (think it was like $11 with tax), and its an actual (and completely drinkable) Straight Bourbon. If you buy a fifth of VODKA for $10 it doesn't even come in a glass bottle! My hat is off to Heaven Hill that they are capable of distilling something that meets the govt standards for Straight Bourbon at this price. And it really is decent. Its actually ok on the rocks, and even drinkable neat. It makes a perfectly enjoyable highball or sour as well. I mostly use my bottle for cooking because I can comfortably afford to drink stuff I'd consider more mid-shelf on a regular basis (Old Forester, Wild Turkey, Jack Daniels), but its nice to know that if all you can afford is $10 for a fifth it can actually buy you a real whiskey, at least if bourbon is your style of choice. 5.5 out of 10 for the flavor and smoothness. 10 out of 10 for the value.

Had this last night as the "well" Bourbon at a local establishment. I don't know if it was because my expectations were so low, but I really enjoyed it. Decent nose with not a lot of complexity. Heavy on the oak. Neat you get a little caramel with a nice dose of oak. It had a dry earthiness/dustiness that I'm becoming a fan of. Not a bad finish. Ice amplifies the char and earth notes. As bourbons go this one is just better than okay, but when you factor in the fact that this is less than $10, it is a definite winner. I've definitely paid much more for bourbons I enjoyed way less. I preferred it over both Beam's standard offering and Heaven Hill's own Evan Williams Black Label. In terms of value, I equate it to my favorite "well" gin, Gordon's. A solid 3 stars.

It's not undrinkable, but it is of low quality. Weak bourbon taste with a specifically bad finish. I guess I could get used to it if there was no other bourbon on earth. What you pay is what you get.

This is a review of the green label 90 proof expression, which is also a major disappointment. It has just enough rye spice to tingle, not burn, and no other flavors whatsoever. It reminds me of Beam White label, but at least it isn't bitter like Beam.

Very, very weak bourbon taste. Light spiciness, but almost no other distinctive bourbon qualities. Just a cheap bourbon, but drinkable for the price of $9.99 a liter
