Proof66 Notes

Henry McKenna bourbon is named for the Irish immigrant who founded a distillery in 1855 and made it according to an old family recipe. The 10yr is claimed to be the only bottled-in-bond, single-barrel bourbon available. It is produced out of the Heaven Hills Distillery of Kentucky.

We had the opportunity to try Henry McKenna at the 2012 Distill America event in Madison. We declared it one of the 12 best spirits we tasted, considering it a wild and feisty whiskey for lively occasions. The label experienced an update in 2013 to emphasize the age statement and the heritage of the "bottled in bond status."

Liquor Snob announced that it "tastes like Maker's Mark in steel-toe boots."

A nicely full flavored bourbon; this one has a heavy saturating sweetness that is nicely balanced by a bit of rye spice. With ice or water, the caramel, honeyed sweetness predominates. My bottle was from August 2005. I look forward to trying this in an Old Fashioned.

Barrel #2163 Oaked on 10-5-05 BDanners review touches on everything one can expect from this bourbon right down to the twist cap. I will add that the heavy Oak influence is sweet fragrant Oak and not dry or bitter. I also get a chocolate cherry cordial flavor and for my tastes the sweetness and Rye notes are perfect. By no means is this overly sweet. I have an interesting thought on why this McKenna is as good as it is. In 2005 "Evan Williams Single Barrel" was barreled in the late summer/early fall. The same time as this 2005 McKenna was. The 2005 vintage Evan Williams became a much applauded bourbon. I believe this McKenna has the same bourbon stock. One batch of barrels went to the future Evan Williams and another batch went to Louisville to the bonded warehouse. The Evan Williams spent about 9years 5 months before bottling and this McKenna a full 10 years. The McKenna is 100 proof vs. Evans 86.6. Whether it was the cooperage or mash bill or weather, 2005 turned out some amazing bourbons for Heaven Hill. Regardless, as a bonded Single Barrel and proudly stated on the label as 10 years old with this much character I'm stocking up !

Well said! Finding this one has, for me, helped ease the sting of Elijah Craig going NAS.

I believe you may be correct about the juice for this & EW SB being the same. I found a couple bottles of the 2005 Evan Williams Single Barrel at a local store the other day. Picked one up because I had reviewed it positively in the past. First sip I immediately thought, "this tastes just like my Henry McKenna 10yr BIB watered down".

Barrel 2039/Barreled 08-25-2005. 10 year, Single-Barrel, Bottled in Bond. What else could you ask for?Dark robust amber color thanks to its 10 year age. The nose is vanilla with leather and musty oak. Neat it enters with a mild dusty sweetness. Notes of dry roast peanuts and a heavy barrel influence that leads to a tingly finish that coats with a lingering oaky mustiness. A lot of Heaven Hills bourbons have an earthy dusty quality that I'm a fan of, and this one turns that up to a 10. If you like a lot of barrel influence, and apparently I do, this is a good choice. I don't see this one becoming an every day pour for me, but it is a definite winner as a change of pace. This is a great buy for around $27 in my area. My only quibble is the screw off cap seems a little cheap for a 10 year old single barrel.

Pure Gold. Sweet and woody with a great value behind here.

I have tried only one bottle of Henry. The nose was oak, the palate was oak and the finish was oak. That is a problem with single barrel bottlings. The price was good considering the age. And, the oak is not quite as objectionable after a couple ounces. However, the oak is overpowering. Another bottle, from another barrel, might be entirely acceptable.

Yankel W. (2016-05-03):
Two later bottlings: Barrel # 2157 is very good, but not much nose. Abit of wood in nose. Palate is sweet and wood keeps in the background. Very good bourbon. Barrel # 2096 has a wonder ful nose and then iw flat as though it were a soda with the carbonation gone. It is sweet in finish and again the wood is not in forefront. This would not be selected by a liqour store as an exclusive barrel. Single barrels are chancy..

Much drier and smokier than many bourbons. The most obvious tastes to me are those of charred oak, tobacco, and leather, and I don't taste any of the usual flavors from the sweeter range of the bourbon spectrum. There are bourbons both higher and lower in proof that taste sweeter than this - so keep that in mind if you're not likely to enjoy a dry spicy whiskey. A blind tasting would have me thinking it's a rye. It needs a fair amount of air and water to be sippable, and works better in a Manhattan. This tastes fine but really functions more as a rye, and I would rather just get some Rittenhouse for $25.

A drier, less bold bourbon. Has decent balance and would probably do well in whiskey cocktails, but for sipping neat I would like a little bit more of a full and dramatic flavor profile.

Definitely give this one another shot. My barrel definitely wasn't lacking in the flavor category. You also have mentioned in some reviews that you like a mustiness in your bourbons, and my bottle had that in spades.

This is a decent example of an extra aged Heaven Hill bourbon. Similar to Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage but with the bonus of being 100 proof.
