Proof66 Notes

Henry McKenna is a value brand bourbon that Heaven Hills describes as "comfortable and unpretentious as an old pair of jeans." It is said to be based upon (and named for) Henry McKenna who used his Irish recipe to make a whiskey in 1855 (though a bit dubious since Irish whiskey would likely be made with barley and bourbon is made primarily from corn).

Heaven Hill Distilleries was founded shortly after prohibition and in the height of the Great Depression with no brands and no ready available stocks of whiskey.

Henry McKenna Bourbon has updated label and is back to original formula before Heaven Hill purchase. The nose is spice ,leather, and caramel. The entry is smooth with palate of smoke, ,spice, leather, black tea ending with spice and hint of vanilla . There seems to be a lot of barley in the mash .Scotch lovers will like this whisky..

Had this as the well bourbon while out the other night (their top shelf was Beam white label, so I figured it couldn't be any worse than that). I liked it well enough to pick up a bottle. I really enjoy this. Nose is pleasant, but thin, with caramel, oak and a light floral note. It enters with a touch of sweetness and then transitions to a dusty oak. Hint of dry roasted peanuts. Short, dry finish with limited to no burn. Ice turns up the sweet just a tick. This is not complex, but there are no "off" notes in this one I didn't like. It's a solid 3.5 star bourbon that gets rounded up to a 4 due to its $10 price tag. This will become a staple in my home bar's "well", probably replacing Benchmark, which I find I enjoy a little less every time I buy.
