Proof66 Notes

High West Distillery is proud of both its small status and its western roots. It is currently restoring a 100 year-old livery stable as its future home and the horseshoes in the logo are meant to honor that tradition. In Utah, they are at an altitude of 7,000 feet in the Rockies. They hope that by enjoying their product the consumer is celebrating their "gumption" at bringing spirits back to Utah.

Where the original Bourye whiskey was a blend of two rye whiskeys (aged 12 and 16 years) with one bourbon (aged 10 years) this second generation of Bourye--the Son of Bourye--uses younger whiskey with a blend of a 5yr old bourbon and a 3yr old rye (see the article at the Salt Lake Tribune). To us at Proof66, this indicates that they adventurous ride of corn to rye grain will be lighter and have fruit overtones due to the younger age.

The Wine Enthusiast 2012 review suggested the whiskey truly was the "best of both worlds" with respect to the bourbon and the rye.

In our own tasting of this whiskey, we enjoyed it a great deal, particularly in cocktails saying:

this is a great mixing whiskey but the whiskey should still be the star rather than the sidekick. It would be an absolute waste to put Son of Bourye in a cocktail designed to hide whiskey… use it where the whiskey is to showcased.

Not quite as good as the Rendezvous Rye or the Double Rye (the only other High West whiskeys I've had), but still an enjoyable pour. This one is thick, robust, and flavorful, but it's also very youthful. There's a little too much sharp alcohol on the nose and also on the palate. The one thing I did like about it is the big, bold honey/vanilla note that takes center stage in the flavor. I imagine age would correct everything I don't like about the SOB so I would guess the original Bourye to be a delightful, 5 star pour. I'll have to seek that one out.
