Proof66 Notes

The Highland Park 12yr single malt is the youngest expression offered and also the first single malt to be produced, starting its run back in 1979.

Named Best of Show - Whisky in the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

About the Producer:

Highland Park Distillery was founded as far back as 1798 and was used primarily for scotch blends until marketing single malts in Highland Park is a distillery devoted to the tradition of scotch making and marks its founding all the way back to 1798. They credit the illicit founding to smuggler Magnus Eunson; the official founding of Highland park from a bureaucratic standpoint was in 1811 by Robert Borwick. Its whiskies were primarily used (and highly sought-after) for blends until 1997 and 1998 when single-malt expressions were greeted with enthusiasm.

Considered as being the great all-rounder, Highland Park 12 combines distinctive features of Speyside, Highland and Islay whiskies. The nose has a complex range of flavors and is well-balanced. Sweet caramel and honey notes are complemented by delicate twig bonfire smoke and a hint of sherry cask maturation. Tastewise, it starts sweet with full-bodied maltiness before turning dry, aromatic and mildly peaty in the prolonged finish - a unique feature of Highland Park. Altogether, a quality Single Malt that would benefit from higher bottling strength and no chill filtering. RATING: 3.9/5.0 ≙ 87 pts

Sweet fruit and berry on the nose and palate. Medium finish with lingering berry sweetness, smooth and sweet but not cheap

Smooth and enjoyable whisky. Fairly priced. Not in the peat flavor profile, a highland malt, though some smoky flavor comes through a touch. Closer to 3.75 then a 4

I had heard so many great things about this single malt I was a little worried I might be in for a let-down, but that simply was not the case. Reminds me of Blanton's Bourbon with how complex the flavors are while still remaining incredibly smooth. Refreshing in the summer and warming in the winter. Goes well before or after a meal. It's an all around perfect single malt!

Complex in a completely graspable way. There's a lot going on without being overwhelming. Terrific balance of sweet, dry, and smokey. This suits a variety of moods and tastes. I don't know what else I can add. This whisky gets a lot of praise, and it's all well-deserved. Is it the best whisky ever made? Certainly not. It's not even one of my favorites. However, it's a darn good, well-made scotch, and you have to appreciate it when the big names don't cut corners and short you on quality due to increasing demand and popularity. For that, I applaud Highland Park.

I don't drink a lot of scotch so I'm gonna keep this simple: This Whisky is delicious,it has a smoky finish and I find myself wanting more after each glass

I think this is the whisky that Johnnie Walker and most of the other top blends strive to be. Has something for everyone: sweetness for the sweet tooth types, smokiness for the smoke heads, and a depth of layers for the snobs and aficionados. I don't think the 15 is any better so given a choice between the two I think I'd opt for the 12 and save some money.

Spot-on review! Haven't tried the 15yr but the 18-year expression is certainly better than HP12. Significantly more expensive though...

I know this whiskey has generally been reviewed at 4 to 5 stars but I find it a bit hot and "thin" for a single malt and no higher abv% than it is. It is a little smoky with some sweetness but I find it a bit lacking compared to some of the more commonly known Highland Malts. A bit of ice mellowed the heat but seemed to kill the character; I suspect because of the average abv%. I like it, but I'm not so sure for the money that I couldn't have a better single malt.

If you took the elements of each of my favorite whiskeys and combined them, you would have HP12. Dollar for dollar I believe this is one of the best on the market. You get a little smoke, a little sweetness, and lots of depth. Its complex, but not hard to drink. This is a great addition to any liquor cabinet.

4.0/5, good scotch. Little smoke, somewhat well rounded but a little more rugged than other more expensive and higher quality malts. Still good, be very happy to have another glass

Too mild for me. Like my scotches more robust.

If i had to pick one single malt scotch...thats the one (or one of his older brothers if money doesnt matter). Perfect balance, bit of peat, bit of sweetness and a nice, mild finish, no harshness. Exciting and yet very easy to drink.

The smoke isn't too overpowering. It's an extremely decent Scotch, but I like others better at this price.

Round, honeyed taste with some peat smoke swirling around. Good whisky, but little weak I think. More ABV or some kind of robustness would give this whisky more character.

You are certainly right: If HP12 was bottled at 43-46% ABV and not been chill filtered, this Single Malt would be even better.

Smokey, malty taste, that starts a little strong but mellows out after the initial sip. I liked it enough, but at this price range I've had better single malts.

Nicely complex and balanced, not overly peaty or smoky, but with a nice finish. lets you know you are drinking scotch and not iodine . Recommended as a good entry level and all around scotch for sipping or mixing. Good value and has enough elements to please just about anyone.
