Proof66 Notes

The Highland Park 18yr single malt is part of the "core expressions," of which the 18yr has enjoyed tremendous accolades.

F. Paul Pacult--writer of the Spirit Journal is quoted on the Highland Park website as stating this particular scotch is "the best spirit in the world."

Wine Enthusiast in 2008 loves this scotch saying at the end of their review: "Buy whatever you can find." A great buying tip because, at $86, you can buy much more expensive scotches. They followed up in 2011 by claiming the 18yr was a "big boy" scotch with "assertive, brawny flavors."

About the Producer:

Highland Park Distillery was founded as far back as 1798 and was used primarily for scotch blends until marketing single malts in Highland Park is a distillery devoted to the tradition of scotch making and marks its founding all the way back to 1798. They credit the illicit founding to smuggler Magnus Eunson; the official founding of Highland park from a bureaucratic standpoint was in 1811 by Robert Borwick. Its whiskies were primarily used (and highly sought-after) for blends until 1997 and 1998 when single-malt expressions were greeted with enthusiasm.

Did a side by side with my 15 year. The 18 is a little oakier, which I like, but the two are so similar that I can't see a justification for the price of the 18. I bought my 15 for $52 and the cheapest I've seen the 18 for is $99 so I'm a little disappointed. It's fantastic, but not double the price fantastic.

Loved the 15 so tried this one. Very good taste slightly more flavor than the 15, but not worth the step in price.

Wonderful nose, silky mouthfeel and a long honeyed finish with a whisper of peat smoke. Add a wee spot of water and enjoy. This is a staple on my bar and one of the best all around drams. Slainte!

More complex and balanced with a fair amount of different elements to keep it interesting. Recommended for someone who wants a very all things to all comers type of scotch - broad appeal and characteristics and doesn't want to break the bank. Recommended as a 18 year old (at age and price levels) that is easy to enjoy and a solid addition to ones bar.
