Proof66 Notes

Hudson Maple Cask Rye whiskey is based upon their Manhattan rye (a true rye whiskey) and, rather than a blended/sweetened whiskey, is actually something very different and interesting. According to the write-up at Cool Hunting (David Graver) Noble--a maple syrup producer in Canada--began buying bourbon barrels from Tuthilltown to age their syrup for a special product. They needed more barrels than Tuthilltown had, so Noble began swapping their used maple syrup barrels back to Tuthilltown who now age their Manhattan rye in those maple syrup barrels. There are no other ingredients--no added sugar, no chemicals, no oddities, no nothing--just the flavors left in the barrel from the prior aging in Canada (and the aging before that of bourbon). In a market flooded with heavily flavored whiskeys, this is an example of interesting craft with a story behind it.

Tuthilltown Spirits was founded in 2001 on the site of Tuthilltown Gristmill, which had been grinding grain to flour using the local river as power for over 220 years. Ralph Erenzo and Vicki Morgan purchased the property and put a microdistillery on the site. We were told that they at first wanted to make a world-class climbing facility over the rocky terrain but that local opposition squelched the idea and they had to something else... and that something else turned into spirits. They first produced a vodka two years later. Since that time they have expanded into several spirits and hope to renew the per-Prohibition New York spirit of craft-distilling. Tuthilltown's Hudson Whiskey brand was acquired by William Grant & Sons in 2010.
