Proof66 Notes

Jameson Black Barrel is one of their "select reserve" whiskeys. The "black barrel" label appears to come from the aging in "flame charred" bourbon barrels and "toasted" sherry casks. They age a blend of pot still whiskey and grain whiskey, the latter they describe as "rare, sweet... not found in any other Jameson whiskey."

About the Producer:

Founder John Jameson acquired the distillery in 1780... by 1805, Jameson had become the world's number one whiskey. While considered a blended whiskey (malt whiskey blended with corn whiskey to sweeten and the lighten the flavors), Jameson prides itself on producing every component from "grain to glass"--the blend is a blend only of married Jameson whiskies. Irish Distillers--the owning company--was purchased by Pernod-Ricard in 1988.

Although it does have some subtle oakiness and wood spice, having this in a session after having some spicy bourbons and smokey scotches is like taking a break to go eat some Gummi Bears. Ultra smooth and sweet. Would be an excellent entry for a newbie to try for their first "on the rocks" dram.

I have a hard time finding this in my area. After I had this for the first time, I make excuse to make that hour drive each way to pick up a bottle of this. Fortunately, they sell in in the BIG bottles. It has a very pleasant wood spice the makes it hard to put down. Of course everyone taste is different, but this is a whiskey that I recommend to everyone I know.

Definitely agree with mvg1 on this bottle. Absolutely a step in the right direction for Jameson. I almost can't go back to the regular Jameson after having the Black Barrel. mvg1 is spot on with the buttery touch, but I don't get much "woody spice" in my bottle. The Jameson 12yr has much more oak spice to it. I'm guessing the smooth subtleties that this bottle offers are maybe due to the sherry cask aging? At any rate, I agree that it is definitely worth a few extra bucks to get this bottle over the standard Jameson.

This to me is almost like the jameson standard blend used to taste before it got into being the bud light of whiskey. Which simply means that i think the quality of standard jameson dropped significantly about 5 years ago. So it was a good step in the right direction but still not up there with the big time heavyweights. But the price is right, because all in all this is a great whiskey. Almost a tropical floral nose with a woody spice, And as always that same buttery touch on the palate that jameson does so well. Medium finish and worth the little extra money. Dont bother with the standard go with the little extra aging you find in the black barrel. By the way you will notice that on the finish, you will taste the grain whiskey they add to this dram.
