Proof66 Notes

Jefferson's Reserve is a whiskey aged 15 years in the same metal warehouse that promotes temperatures extremes as their flagship 8yr bourbon. The longer aging promotes a more robust--or, in the words of the distillery, "complex, elegant and sophisticated."
Production of the whiskeys is currently outsourced to Kentucky Bourbon Distillers according to Castle Brand's annual report.

Sweet, smooth, and easy drinking! To me, the flavor profile is very similar to that of Woodford Reserve – maybe a little sweeter and a little less spicy. Very good neat, and in cocktails! Made a great Mint Julep and an outstanding Manhattan with Carpano Antica. This is a bit on the pricey side ($55) which knocked it down to 4 stars. Compared to other bourbons in this price range (Blanton’s, Knob Creek SB, RHF, Woodford Reserve DO), I would choose this last. When I pay this much, I expect a more complex flavor profile with more layers and depth. Very glad I tried it and enjoyed it immensely, but not sure how soon I’ll buy another bottle.

I am surprised by the lack of reviews on this Bourbon. I know it is sourced whiskey and hence maybe not all that familiar to people. Great nose adding in some exotics like Apricot and Black Tea. Most of the nose comes through to the taste and the flavors meld nicely together. The mouth feel and layering of flavors is very good. For the price I believe Woodfords Reserve can deliver almost as much for about $32. I paid much less for this Jefferson's than what is shown in the description above. if I were to throw out price than this would win over the Woodfords because of superior taste. In viscosity, mouth feel, color and personality it is very Woodfords like.

BDanner (2016-01-15):
I have yet to try this one (I have purchased a bottle that was batch selected by my local ABC store, saving it for a special occasion since at $54 it has been my most expensive purchase to date), but the apricot/dried fruit note is what I've enjoyed about all the Jefferson expressions I've tried. I know their juice is sourced, but I don't get that note from any other bourbon.

This bourbon is good, but after trying it I've come to the conclusion that I prefer my bourbons like I prefer my Islay scotches; slightly on the younger side. I think 6-9 years is the bourbon sweet spot for me. Aging beyond that seems to smooth and dull some of the flavors that I like. This one has vanilla, butterscotch, and oak on the nose. On the palate I get vanilla again, along with tobacco, honey, spice, and oak. The lingering finish leaves the vanilla (again), oak, and a little char. I can definitely taste and appreciate the quality of this bourbon, but I think I prefer their 8 year over this one.

I dont know why this expression is not rated higher. The nose is rich with scents of caramel, vanilla , and bit of heater. It goes down smooth with a bit of warming you can taste the toasty vanilla and cinnamon as it settles on the pallet. I highly recommend this bourbon.
