American Whiskey - Bourbon
Jefferson's 8yr Very Small Batch Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
This is a Tier 2 score in the Whiskey category. It means critics have highly recommended the spirit as a benchmark in the category.
Jefferson's bourbon is an 8yr bourbon aged in a "metal warehouse" to "accentuate the extreme temperatures that Kentucky is blessed with." (That is, the temperatures expand and contract the whiskey in the barrel promoting contact with the oak.) It appears the bourbon is sourced from MPG of Indiana according to the filing with the federal Tax and Trade Bureau.
McLain & Kyne was founded by Trey Zoeller, who claims ancestry with the McLain family, themselves bourbon distillers as far back as the 18th century. The company produces the Jefferson's label and acquires bourbon from a variety of sources, then bottles and labels them in Kentucky. This label is owned by Castle Brands after the purchase in October of 2007 and the production itself is often undertaken by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, themselves a respected producer of small-batch whiskeys. (From the Castle Brands annual report SEC Filing 001-32849)
