Proof66 Notes

Jesse James bourbon is made in honor of the notorious and legendary American outlaw. The bourbon itself is aged for 3 years in American oak prior to bottling and is said to be made in accordance with what they claim are standards of the 18th century southern states. The label itself is commissioned by Jesse James Dupree from the band Jackyl, who claims that having been "personally responsible for millions of gallons of beer and whiskey" over the years, he created his own label for beer and whiskey.

While the marketing website (as of December 2011) claims that the whiskey is distilled in Kentucky, it is listed with the Tax and Trade Bureau with LeVecke in California, whom we've listed here as the producer. This is not uncommon in the industry and not a knock on the spirit--we take it to mean the distillate comes from Kentucky where the bourbon is blended and bottled in California for sale. The label itself is owned and managed by Jesse James Spirits.

For those interested in market growth, Beverage Dynamics mentioned the brand as a "rising star" (meaning it showed significant growth in its first two years) in 2013 and 2014.

Though I am not an expert on Bourbons, I have tasted my fair share. I am just your average person that enjoys a good bourbon. Jesse James Bourbon is one that I enjoy sipping or as a mixer. It has a smooth finish that is very pleasant with a hint of oak. I have tried the original and the honey flavored. I really enjoy both, but the honey is one of my favorites. For the price point, I think it is better than some of it's more expensive counterparts. Jesse James Dupree has done a wonderful job with this bourbon, kept it American made and bottled. I recommend giving it a try. It comes in three flavors, the Original, Honey and Spiced.

Not a big fan of this bourbon. It's not a sipping bourbon for sure and if you're mixing it, it will need at least 4:1 of whatever you're mixing it with to try to drown out the nastiness. Probably good for cooking or soaking your smoker chips in, but not for drinking.

Bought this for a friend because he's a fan of Full Throttle Saloon and wanted to try it. He gave it back after he tried it! The nose is the best part. Other than that it really is just a cheap, unrefined bourbon. Might use it for mixed drinks or maybe a bourbon barrel aged home brewed beer (say that 5 times fast).

I recently learned about Jesse James bourbon after watching the reality television show, “Full Throttle Saloon” on TruTv. The television series is about the annual biker rally held in Sturgis, SD and features the bourbon’s current namesake, and rock band Jackyl lead singer, Jesse James Dupree, as one of the cast members. With that in mind, my expectations for the quality of this bourbon were somewhat mixed. However, I was exceedingly surprised after receiving the samples from the distributor and partaking of the first sip. But first, some background on this bourbon….. According to the distributor, Levecke Brands, Inc., and the bottle label, this 80 proof product is “distilled in the heart of Kentucky to perfection, old-time charcoal mellowed and aged in oak casks to achieve an incredibly smooth and full-bourbon character that makes this one of the finest whiskeys. We have carefully selected the finest, home-grown ingredients to create this smooth Bourbon Whiskey. We start with a mash that is a minimum of 51% corn. We use new, charred oak barrels for aging. We take great care in producing a Bourbon Whiskey to stand up to the Outlaw in you!” What was packaged in the bottles was aged for 36 months, but WAS as smooth as silk and had a great, robust flavor. The charcoal was not overpowering as in some of the other bourbons that use this process, but instead had just a hint that was accompanied by traces of oak and a nice, full body and consistency. It had a deep amber color reminiscent of bourbons that retail for much more than the average price of a bottle of Jesse James, which is in the $14.00 range. Though I did not dare foul the taste of this pleasant surprise by mixing the bourbon with any type of soft drink or other mixer, (I am a purist and prefer to sip good bourbon), I am sure it would deliver the same high quality for use in such beverages. I HIGHLY recommend this bourbon to bourbon lovers everywhere, and NOT just the biker crowd. Congratulations, Jesse, on quality bourbon that is sure to take its place among the great bourbons on the shelves of aficionados and establishments everywhere!
