Proof66 Notes

Jim Beam Pre-Prohibition Rye Whiskey is a re-formulation and re-launch of their Beam rye. It is said to be one of the Beam family's "oldest recipes." It carries no age statement and a the moment we don't know the composition of the grain bill. It will have been aged at least 4 years in oak (and likely a measure longer).

Jim Beam Rye - A Rye Whiskey Experience -- Jim Beam releases their version on Pre-Prohibition style Rye whiskey…so how does it stand up to the discerning palette? I entered the liquor store with the notion that I wanted to try something different. As I am prone to do, I gravitate to the whiskey section and after perusing for several minutes, my eyes fall as if by chance to the inviting dark green label which promises “pre-prohibition” style Rye whiskey…the asking price of 19.99 on sale is the plus which compels my purchase… I get home and unwrap the cellophane protective shield and unscrew the cap. I sniff the bottle…nothing unusual…smells like whiskey. I pour a two finger shot into my favorite whiskey glass and smell again….still nothing remarkable. I bring the glass to my lips and sip. The immediate taste is smooth like subtle caramel - smokey undertones and of course the familiar taste that rye imparts…but with virtually no bite. I have a couple of shots without any perceptible change to my palette or diminished appreciation for the taste. I have a couple more shots without any perceptible change to my palette or diminished appreciation for the taste. I am buzzed…I look at the bottle again…oh wow…90 proof… I am trying to think of a smoother whiskey and even Gentleman Jack is hard pressed to rise above…especially when factoring in the 90 proof factor… This shit makes me want to run out and jump a freight train to adventure land… Of course, I won’t do that because I am a sensible drinker…in that even when I am drunk I don’t jump onto freight trains… I will go take a piss off my balcony though… Stepping outside into the cool new January air, I feel good. Like a boy who just got everything he wanted for Christmas. I suddenly feel a revived sense of wellness…everything will be OK…so you don’t like the new president-elect? who cares? As long as he doesn’t try to reinstate prohibition, we will get through this…I know I will…with the help of my new friend Jim Beam Rye…

Not Recommended-And that is unfortunate because this whiskey has a tasty mix of Rye spice and I assume a good dose of corn in the mash bill, but it also has the waxy, syrupy and somewhat sickening mouth feel and taste that accompanies lower level Jim Beam products. I believe this comes from taking too much of the bottom cut of the distillate. Probably an attempt to stretch out the volume being collected. Surprisingly Jim Beam "Single Barrel Bourbon" does not have that attribute, nor do the higher quality whiskeys from Beam-Suntory. (i.e. OGD-Haydens-Knob Creek etc.) But this Jim Beam Rye has that objectionable taste in spades just like "White Label" does.

I never like Jim Beam rye when it was 80 proof. This 90 proof Jim beam rye is just a 90-proof offering of the old 80-proof "Yellow Label" rye.Same favor except rye is more pronounced due to higher proof .It seems to have Jim Beam White label taste with rye ending. it is not as good as Jim Beam White Label or even Old Overholt Rye from same producer. It is $26 dollars here.RI-1 Rye from Suntory Jim Beam brands is $26. Get it instead and have a decent rye. Also for Knob Creek Rye is good from same producer. It is about $6 more.

In general, I find that anything with "Beam" on the label is half as good and twice as expensive as similar offerings from other companies, and this is no exception. Don't be fooled by the label: they claim it is a "reformulation," but it is obviously just a 90-proof offering of the old 80-proof "Yellow Label" rye. Good rye flavor, but everything else about it is weak, watery, bland. For exactly the same price, Rittenhouse 100 Rye leaves it in the dust.
