Proof66 Notes

Jim Beam Single Barrel Bourbon is a selected set of barrels that the press release announces comprises less than 1% of the total bourbon whiskey produced at Beam. Each bottle is numbered with the specific barrel from which it came and it implies to us that there will be some variation from bottle to bottle. According to an interview with the Bourbon Blog (Tom Fischer), the bourbon will be chill-filtered (giving it a lighter and clearer quality) aged between 4 and 7 years.

This is a very nice, smooth bourbon at a great price. Got mine for $25 in their pack with the decanter. My tasting notes follow most of the observations here, with the exception of the char factor. A few (including an Islay drinker) note significant char- I got an extremely light touch of char when looking for it but would not characterize this bourbon as char heavy at all. It could be differing batches- not sure. Nonetheless, I got touches of fruit, a bit of grain, and a heavy but not overwhelming dose of oak. Nicely balanced. Not really spicy or terribly complex. Not overly sweet like some of the other Beam products. I will definitely keep one of these around in the collection- it is nice on its own and I find a splash of Angostura really brings out a lot in this bourbon. Would not use for heavily mixed drinks, but I expect it to do well in Manhattans and Old Fashioneds and the like.

I was reluctant to try this thinking I would just get regular JB White Label in a fancier bottle with a cork. My supermarket just discontinued it and cut the price in half to $20 a bottle so I thought I would give it a shot. What an amazing surprise! Read Irishman and Muncher's review(s) here as they are the real pros and hit this spot on! A very nice sweet and fruity nose and initial taste gets balanced out perfectly with heavy oak and barrel char. Will buy again if I can find it!

I was close to rating this Bourbon at 3 stars, but as I was at about 3.8 stars I went for the 4. I am actually a little surprised by this Bourbon. It does not have the complexity I desire, nor does it have all the nose/tastes associated with the best. But I find I really like it. I notice the low rye flavor and lack of unique character but at the same time applaud the classic Bourbon flavors and the smoothness of a 95 proof. Chocolate and Coconut are evident with a toasty malt also. I wish there were some more Rye in the mix but still this is very good Bourbon.

I'd call this one the bourbon for Islay scotch drinkers. Where Islay scotches have peat and smoke as their strong, distinguishing characteric, the Beam Single Barrel has oak and char at a level that makes it linger in a similar way. Everything else about it reminds me of the 12 year, which itself is a fantastic bourbon. It seems to be trendy for some people to look down their noses at anything Beam in favor of Buffalo Trace boutique whiskeys, but in my opinion Beam's best is every bit as good as anything out of Trace.

Irishman (2014-12-23):
Excellent way to describe this one and I couldn't agree more!

Cranecreek (2016-01-09):
I am glad to see that someone (Muncher) can look past Jim Beam's White Label and objectlevy judge a very good Bourbon.

I had the pleasure of tasting this at the Jim Beam Distillery and it did not disappoint. Understanding that there could be slight variations in the profile from barrel to barrel, the barrel that filled the bottle I tasted was amazing. A very nicely balanced profile of oak, caramel, corn, and everything that makes bourbon amazing. Definitely worth keeping this one in stock at your home bar.
