Proof66 Notes

Today, Johnnie Walker offers several different "labels" of scotch whisky, usually designated by label color but recently offering a line of "select casks" scotch. First released in 2015, the Rye Cask Finish is aged for 10 years... a little younger than many scotches on the market.

Aside from High West's Campfire whiskey I'm surprised that nobody has released a whisk(e)y like this before now. In my opinion rye spice sounds like the perfect compliment to a malty, smoky, and slightly sweet scotch. I like everything about this whisky; the label is appealing, the age is appropriate given that youth compliments the rye flavor profile, and it's strength isn't at the usual weak blend proof of 80. Flavor wise, what I first thought about when tasting it is that it tastes like a mix of 2 or 3 parts Old Pulteney 12 year and 1 part Knob Creek Rye. It has the potential of being a really enjoyable pour, I just think it might take a little bit of time for me to wrap my head around so many American flavors being present in a scotch.

I loved the High West Campfire. Seeing this makes me want to try the Walker pretty bad. I like rye, I like malted barley, can't see why I wouldn't love them together.
