Proof66 Notes

Johnnie Walker Blue Label is the high-end blend (they call it their "most treasured blend") from Johnnie Walker, though available as a novelty in many bars. The rarity of the blend is dictated by the rarity of the scotches used in the blending, many of which are from distilleries that are no longer in operation. Today, they claim that only 1 in 10,000 casks are of "sufficient character" for the blue label blend.

How To Drink It

Pour 1.5 oz. of Johnnie Walker Blue Label into a tumbler glass without ice

Accompany with a tall glass of chilled water on the side

Alternate sips, starting with the water, to fully unlock the blend's astonishing complexity

4.25/5.0. In a blind taste test, most experienced scotch drinkers would certainly appreciate this blend, however for the price of $225, there are so many better options, one could buy two or three beautiful single malts or even a single cask single malt selections...also, only an 80 proof blend, when the delicious green label clocked in at 86 proof

Phizbin (2016-03-26):
I agree completely. People tend to hate on this scotch but I think they really hate on the price. It's hard to justify. My take: you buy Blue Label when you need to make sure that someone knows, beyond all doubt, that you spent a lot of money. Kinda like buying a Rolex. I guess there's a place for that too.

My friend bought a bottle of this, took his first sip, frowned, and said "It's good". That's the best way I could summarize this.

"The rarity of the blend is dictated by the rarity of the scotches used in the blending, many of which are from distilleries that are no longer in operation." This is true since on even on the first sip, you can really taste the Port Ellen they blended in the blue label. Port Ellen has already closed down but I believe Diageo owns it still.

Be real with yourself, you're paying for the brand, not the quality. Everyone knows this and yet the nonsense persists. It isn't even a single malt, it isn't even old. You could have a life changing whisky for less than half the price. You could have a fine experience with a bourbon a TENTH of the price. You could have one of the best rums ever, the 23 year Zacapa, for $33. I give it two stars for flavor and smoothness, but this unquestionably a rip-off.

I tried a glass of this at a whiskey bar in town. Honestly I could find no fault in the taste. It's light, complex, delicious, a wonderful nose and finish. The problem is the price. This is in no way a $200 scotch. It's made and marketed for those who want to brag about having a $200+ bottle of scotch in my opinion. At $50-$75 it would be a 5 star

I absolutly agree(except for the finish). Priced at $50 this would be a staple for when you'd like a very light sipper.

The review by the Irishman has it right. Like sipping air. The problem with that is for about $200 I had better have something memorable. No doubt smooth as spring water but also with as little character. My friend and I having tried it in 5 minutes found no recollection of any flavors or significant finish. Very disappointed. Buy the Black Label if you have to have JW.(update): Got a small bottle is a gift pack I had really purchased to try the new Platinum. Turns out the blenders at JW are not consistent at all. This new bottle was worth 3 stars instead of the original 1 because of the pleasant presence of some smoke and fruit flavors. Still no finish and a bit weak for the price.

Updated Review: My first review of this Scotch was about 5 years ago. I was a newbie Scotch drinker and this one seemed to summon me into the snobbery that is Scotch. I am dropping this down to a 4-star rating (from 5-stars) due to the price, but you can't hate something for what it's supposed to be. This bottle is not for the cigar smoking Scotch lovers. This is very light and subtle. It has a great flavor profile, oak, smoke, caramel, etc., but it is all muted in a quiet story. Kind of like the "Goodnight Moon" version of Scotch. Original Review in Dec, 2009: This is by far the best scotch I have ever had. Its like drinking air its so light.

Very good flavor and smoothness. Only flaw is price. There are other blends out there that are just as good at a reasonable price.

Very good. Flavorful with nothing offensive about it. I like the sweetness and the little bit of smoke in there. But the price. In no way does this blow my mind to the point that I'd drop 2 hondos on it. I agree with other reviewers that this is a 50 dollar bottle. Would be interesting to do a blind side by side with the black, green, and gold labels.

This whisky is for people with more money than sense... not worth buying.

As others have said it is very smooth. The nose gives me a butterscotch aroma mixed with a bit of smokey character. The taste follows suit, with smokiness playing a stronger, yet not distracting role. The smooth character guides you to a sweet, flavorful finish that lingers only a few mere seconds, which disappointments me. The price is unfortunately what will keep a lot of folks away. I agree with others this is a $50 whisky. I would not pay more than $80 for it. I am sure if l paid that price l would be happier, but after paying $30 a glass the first time l had it, my stepfather just giving me a glass allows me to be objective.

I must admit, I would never buy another bottle of this... ever... (I've had 2). But there is a special place in my heart for blue label. This was the first whiskey I ever dared to 'taste' rather than 'shoot'. I have many friends that have had similar experiences. This may be the perfect (albeit expensive) intro into scotch due largly to the extreme smoothness & of course the marketing which will make the newb happy :) (I know I was very happy :)). Once you condition someone to not fear the burn/sting of lesser whiskey's you might be ready to walk your new whisky loving friend to some really cool flavors to see if they like smokey? Oak? Spicy? Sweet? etc. Blue label is what it is, expensive scotch that is smoothed out for mass appeal. And that's fine by me if it gets people to try others :)

I must admit I agree with bourbob's and rickpow99's reviews. This whiskey cannot be compared to most single malts that cost just a third of it's price. In my opinion it's just overrated, over-advertised and overpriced by Diageo's marketing department. I would recommend you to try a glass if it's proposed to you just to see for yourselves. If you want to spend this amount of money try a 25yo Talisker or an 18yo Oban instead.

Merely mediocre but astronomically priced. This is a triumph of marketing rather than super premium Scotch.

For $200, I want more than this. Tastes like someone put out a cheap cigar in a glass of Johnnie Walker Red. Save that money and buy seven bottles of Famous Grouse 12yr Reserve instead.

Have had blue on a couple if occasions. As a single malt drinker I cant understand the attraction to this? The super high price aside (gotta love marketing) I found this to Pale in comparison to the complexity and dynamic flavors of the single malts. I would pass if offered again in favor of something else.

Scotch nurtured for 18 long years makes its every drop precious, i have the good luck of having 2 of these bottles in the last two years and with every sip i love it even more. Johnie walker have outdone themselves. The smoothness is simply unbelievable, the color is that lovely golden that you would expect from an 18 year old scotch. the taste is strong but the smoothness makes it all worth while Its expensive but hey its also 18 years of dedication and hard work to make a master peice

I'm not typically a Johnnie Walker fan, but enjoyed a glass of Blue while on vacation. Take this drink straight up so you can enjoy the flavor fully (because its going to cost you). It goes down smooth and doesn't taste like you're drinking from an ash tray like some of Walker's more modestly priced selections. Thoroughly enjoyed by glass, but I probably wouldn't spring for the cost of a whole bottle.
