Proof66 Notes

Today, Johnnie Walker offers several different "labels" of scotch whisky, designated by color. Johnnie Walker Double Black scotch is based on the famous Johnnie Walker Black Label blended scotch that is the bulwark of the Johnnie Walker brand. It introduces more peat/smoke than is typical for the black label (hence, the "double") and will appeal to a drinker more suited to Islay single malts or smokier scotches.

Still trying to figure this one out. I love regular JWB - a perfectly balanced whisky and quite complex for the price. The Double Black takes the smokiness to such a length it's really all you taste when drinking it neat. It almost seems forced and artificial, making it somewhat one dimensional. The other thing that really bugs me is that it's bottled at 40% ABV when JWB is bottled at 43%. So I pay $10 more to get a lower proof!? What am I missing here!? I did find this to be quite enjoyable on the rocks as some of the more traditional sweetness and spice from JWB starts to come out. Also, makes a very interesting and solid Rob Roy. All in all, I'm glad I tried it, but doubt I'll buy another bottle.

Muncher (2015-12-11):
Where the heck do you live where Johnnie Black is 86 proof?! I just checked my bottle and it's like the website says: 80 proof.

Muncher (2015-12-11):
Correction: I guess proof66 lists JWB at 86 proof. Wow, all my bottles have been 80.

Proof66 Staff (2015-12-12):
Hi guys... staff editor here. That 86 proof was an error on our part. All the sources we can locate reflect 80 proof. (It's not unheard of to see variations in proof in different regions but this looks like an outright error on our part.) I just corrected our database and it should read 80 proof now. Sorry about the confusion!

KaiserSoze (2015-12-22):
Hey Muncher, sorry just saw your comment. I looked at my current bottle and it is 80 proof. I'm sure I've had past bottles that were 86...not sure when they changed. Glad you mentioned it!

As a regular Black Label drinker, I've been intrigued to try the Double Black for some time. Finally came across a bottle and gave it a go. One can really get the smokey oak cask smell instantly, peatiness is heavier than the standard black label as a comparison. Though the price is getting close to some single malts, it's definitely worth a sampling.

I'm a big fan of smoky/peaty scotches and enjoy the black label but something seems to be missing here. Can't quite put my finger on it though and almost gave 4 stars. Maybe just a bit too much grain whiskey that takes away some of the fullness I expect from a richly flavored scotch. Not that it's bad. And I can see some liking this better than the Black label. But, for my money, I'd step up to Laphroaig if I wanted something fuller.

Smoke and lots off smoke, both peat and charred, still a decent drink

I'm very disappointed with this one. I agree with Korean that it's very similar to the standard Black, which I like, but what pisses me off is I paid quite a bit more for the Double. It's far too wimpy to wear the name Double Black. If the people at Johnnie are going to name this whisky Double Black they need to substantially reduce the girly sweet grain whisky, increase the ABV, and step up the peat and smoke. I feel like I was ripped off.

mct (2015-08-14):
I dont think the double-black is another version of the black label. The double for me is closer to a "smoke flavored Red Label".

peathead (2016-11-06):
Why do you complain? It's a fancy bottle for people who know nothing about Scotch. I wonder why you bought it :D

I don't taste much difference compare to the black label but one thing I noticed was, it is simply outstanding with ice.

Just a beautiful smoky scotch. Somewhere inbetween the heavier smoky/peaty guys (laph/ard/laga) & some of the lighter blends. This is a nice half step towards the heavier peat flavored single malts. If you like peaty single malts & you are looking for a cheaper, slightly lighter (but not by much) smoky alternative this is a good value bottle & it's one I personally always keep at my bar.

Call me surprised. A JW that actually is worth the hype. Nose is all saline and smoke with a touch of maple; tastes the same, but is well balanced. A little hot, but water smooths it out and creates something not unlike maple-glazed ham.

Johnnie does it again , smoothness to match the blue label, A little more smokey than the black but the taste and aroma is simply fantastic. The bottle too looks fantastic , A MUST FOR EVERY BAR
