Proof66 Notes

Johnnie Walker--the man whose name would grace the bottles of more scotch whisky than any other brand in the 21st century--was born in 1805 and began as a grocery store manager at age 14 in 1819. Part of the grocery business was a personal blend of whisky. Yet it was his son Alexander who took the Johnnie Walker blend of whisky to the worldwide markets in its square bottle (the first of its kind and designed to save space in shipping) in 1860. The Eyewitness Companion to Whiskey quotes brand owner Diageo claiming over 7 million casks of whisky in the maturation process at any given time. This unrivaled amount of whisky allows them great specificity and consistency in their blends and that all the scotch together is worth more than all the gold in the vaults of the Bank of England. The company was acquired by Guiness in 1985, which eventually became Diageo in a merger in 1997.

Today, Johnnie Walker offers several different "labels" of scotch whisky, designated by color. The green label is the first and most decorted of their luxury blends. It's a blend of four scotches including Talisker, Linkwood, Cragganmore, and Caol Ila. The combination is supposed to "evoke the freshness of the outdoors."

Named Top Blended Malt Scotch in the 2007 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

I finally found it! Bought all the store had, which was just 2 bottles, but I'm excited nonetheless. The first "pure malt" blend that I've had (as far as I know) and it's delicious. Has a richness and a thickness of flavor that I think is harder to create with the grain whisky filler that most other blends contain. Not very smoky or peaty, but that's alright; I read the description of the 4 single malts used so I wasn't expecting an Islay like flavor profile. If anyone knows of any other pure malt blends please let me know in a comment. Thx

Hey... hate to brag too much but our search algorithm can help you! If you type in "blended malt," you'll be rewarded with several different labels that claim to be blends of single malt whisky. (That search isn't 100% perfect but it really narrows things down.) Big Peat is one that specializes in Islay. Monkey Shoulder is another with a blend of 3 Speyside malts. The current highest rated is the Wemyss 12yr Hive and was actually named "Best Blended Malt" at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Hope that this helps!

Finally found some to try. Was very pleased with the flavor. I am not sure I would buy a bottle as there are many others that I would prefer.

I couldn't for the life of me find the appeal of this whiskey when I first tried it. Upon a second inspection I noticed a fruity almost apple juice flavor with mild smoke. Almost like a sweet wine on the nose with a little water or ice. Doesn't have that enjoyably long finish you would expect from a few single malts blended. Increasingly hard to find; I would recommend buying if found.

4.25/5, they are getting harder to find! The gentle smokey quality really shines through without any of the typical islay character, briny, salty, peaty coastal flavors. For me it is a hair behind double black but nearly even

The best JW. I prefer it neat or on the rocks. The price can be a little intimidating, but it is definitely worth it.

Very elegant whisky, a tad of salt, well balanced, slight smoke and warmth. Too bad it's only available in Taiwan since some time ago, I got one of the last ones sold in Sweden. If you can find it, buy it!

I know I'll take heat for giving this only 3 stars. I added a little water later on to open it up and my fiancee thought I was drinking wine by the way it smelled. Very lite and not heavy on the palette. It's a nice every day blend but not my favorite out there.

I bought this one for a great price ($38) a few months ago, in part because the price was so low and I knew it would go back up. Between Gold and Green, Green is my favorite. It has bite, smokiness, that peat of Isla whiskies. It has more character than Gold, and while its a slight bit rougher, its the better pour. Think of Green as the more enthusiast version of Black. Black whets your whisky appetite if you e just getting started, and Green introduces you to the most adventurous segment of the Scotch world. If anyone is trying to decide between Green and Gold in the JW line, go for the Green. Youll save around $30, and get more dimension.

Very good. Complex flavour that really leaves you wanting to try more. Would give it higher stars but I'm just not a scotch drinker, so it's hard to be completely unbias.

This thing deservedthe awards its received. It's easily the best scotch I've ever had... and that's saying something for a $50 scotch when you can pay hundreds.
