Proof66 Notes

Johnny Drum Private Stock bourbon is named in tribute to the young boys of less-than-18 years of age who enlisted in the confederate army as drummers. Johnny Drum is said to have come to Kentucky after the war and founded a tradition of "fine sipping whiskey." This is considered a sour mash recipe" and produced in limited batches. It claims to be hand-made by a five-generation tradition of master distillers.

First of all there is no way in the world that this is 12 year old bourbon as the above description says. If it is a single day over 4 years I would be amazed. A poor representation of a bourbon. Very thin and lacking much flavor at all. Now the "100 proof private stock" which I have reviewed previously was quite good, but this is not at all remarkable. No flavors to speak of and an objectionable off putting taste. At first I was not so sure what that was but after reading the label with the "charcoal filtered" displayed, I then knew what that weird taste was- low quality charcoal, similar to "charcoal briquets"! There are many straight bourbons superior to this for the same or less price. Do not waste your money on this product. I don't blame 66 on their description, as it is difficult to keep up with all of the whiskies and their claims now days. On further inspection the back of the bottle actually says "AGED 4 YEARS"

Tango (2017-03-11):
The original Johnnie Drum Black had 12 years old stated on label. Now the Johnnie Drum Label Black no age statement is minimum of whiskies four to twelve years old according to the. producer.. Probably mostly 4 years old.

Tango (2017-03-11):
Be aware the original Johnnie Drum Private Stock was 15 years old . Now current Private Stock has no age statement.

Cranecreek (2017-03-12):
On further inspection the back of the bottle actually says "AGED 4 YEARS" have added that to the end of the review.

Proof66 Staff (2017-03-13):
Hi Cranecreek... you're right. Officially, this isn't an age statement but it appears that the bourbon contains spirit aged "up to" 12 years. (The minimum, as you point out, is 4.) We've corrected our notes above... sorry about that. Thanks for pointing it out!
