Proof66 Notes

The Knappogue 12yr Irish Whiskey is the first move of the brand away from vintage expressions and into age statements. It is described as having an "elegant fruit, mildly spicy, citrus taste." The 12yr expression--aged in bourbon whiskey barrels--is the first move of Knappogue in producing age statement whiskeys rather than vintage expressions in order to highlight the long aging and premium status of their whiskey.

In a sterling review from Drink Spirits (Geoff Kleinman) called it "a perfect example of a great Irish whiskey that manages to capture a great deal of flavor and complexity from the malted barley and present them in a light and affable manner."

I'm reminded of the Glenmo 10 year scotch, but the Knappogue 12 has the citrus front and center with everything else sitting quietly in the background. With nothing else to balance the citrus, it does take on a sour quality that detracts from the experience a bit. It's an interesting drink, and I think it would make some tasty Irish whiskey cocktails, but having it neat just doesn't excite me that much.

Knappogue 12 year-old single malt won our little taste test. Up against Red Breast 12 year-old, Jamison's 12 year-old, and a ringer bottle of off-the-shelf Bushmill's, Knappogue Castle was the number one preferred whiskey. It was unanimous.

It's not as smooth as high-quality blended whiskies, but it has a nice, complex taste.

I tried this one when i had nothing else better to do. I had the intention of trying my go to brands but then i came across knappogue Castle. All of a sudden  I wanted  to try something new, diiferent, and fresh. And let me tell you malt maniacs this was well worth it. I did not realise until i read the bottle of knappogue castle how many people use coloring in there whiskey's for presentaion puposes but this does not need a thing.! The nose very fresh with apple, fresh lemon, rich oak and spice. on the palate you get almost the same as on the nose but then on the finish you get a ripe banana that is absoulutly luscious... Medium finish but the taste does carry for a while. So the next time you are at the liquor store and you feel like going to your go to whiskey, your going to want to give this one a try, because this will be on that go to whiskey list  for next time.
