Proof66 Notes

Knob Creek rye whiskey was launched in 2012 to take advantage of a growing interest and re-awakening of rye grain. Unlike the bourbon, it does not carry an age statement but is considered to be a blend of ryes that are aged "up to" 9 years.

Knob Creek Rye is great rye.. The nose is bold with oak, vanilla,,caramel , pipe tobacco and leather. The entry is warm with palate of char oak, spice, ending with finish of vanilla, spice, corn and char oak.Knob creek Rye has a lot of char like Knob Creek Bourbon. If you like Knob Creek Bourbon, then you will like this rye.

This is the best straight Rye whiskey I have had. I tried the 95% Rye and found them to be young tasting and spicy to a fault. They all were too heavy in the mint and herbal qualities. This Knob Creek is what I would call a bourbon drinkers Rye whiskey. On the nose it is similar to Knob Creek bourbon with notes of apple, raisin and extracts of baking spices. The taste experience is much like a high percentage rye bourbon which I personally prefer. Darker in color and flavors which I believe are because of a higher corn percentage in the mash bill which brings out more sweetness and deeper round flavors. There are tastes of apple, date, golden raisin, and maple but still being dominated by a spicy woodiness.

Phizbin (2016-10-17):
It might be bad form to recommend another product in the review section but you might check out the 1776 Rye. It was dry and robust in the same way I think of for Knob Creek. Plus, cheaper! And I love value buys.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Spicy, bold, and full of flavor! This is how whiskey is supposed to taste! Although pricier, I enjoyed this just as much, if not a little more, than Rittenhouse BIB. Very tasty "neat" with a splash of water and made a world-class Manhattan with Carpano Antica. Very impressed with Knob Creek’s lineup thus far! I most definitely see another bottle of this for myself in the very near future!

Cranecreek (2016-09-08):
Going on to my list of got to try ! I have not had any Knob Creek I did not like-hope this is the same.

KaiserSoze (2016-09-09):
Yes, I highly recommend you try this right away! If you like the small batch bourbon, you will like this's as well (I personally enjoyed even more)! Great as a sipper straight or in your favorite whiskey cocktail. If you like Manhattans, you have to try with this whiskey! Enjoy!!!

Cranecreek (2016-09-10):
I have never made a Manhattan. Would you share your favorite recipe, with brand names of ingredients & proportions and method ?

KaiserSoze (2016-09-12):
I’ll try to keep this short as this is something I could go on forever with, haha! My favorite recipe suggestion would be to use 2 parts of a bold, high-proof rye like Knob Creek Rye (Rittenhouse BIB also works well). One part of Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth (Coochi Di Torino & Vya are also good alternatives that are a little cheaper). About 2-3 dashes of Fee Brothers Whiskey Barrel Aged Aromatic Bitters. Stir ingredients in a mixing glass with ice for a good 30 seconds to both chill and dilute the cocktail. Strain into a chilled Coupe Glass or Nick & Nora Glass. Garnish with a Luxardo Maraschino Cherry. Youtube has a lot of great suggestions for recipes and methods as well. Play around with your ingredients and proportions and you’ll find out what works best for you! Contrary to many cocktail nazi’s, there’s no “wrong way” to make a Manhattan as long as it’s what you like! Cheers!

Cranecreek (2016-09-13):
Just what I needed-cleared up some thoughts about why-when-who. Need to go shopping one day soon, will post my results here in the future. "shaken not stirred" or was it "stirred not shaken"? Mmm, seems familiar. Cheers !

not sweet enough. asphalt-like, as some other reviewers noted. i generally DON'T like higher-proof rye but thought i'd try this one. it's more adventuresome than Bulleit(which bores me, quickly)but not as magnanimous and fun as High West Double Rye ... not a fan of this stuff ... anyone wanna trade me something else for the rest of this bottle ? 8^D

Tasting this for first time and comparing to KC bourbon and Bulleit Rye. Great whiskey. I drink my whiskey neat. Lots of excellent nose, much more so than KC bourbon (which is excellent as well). Only with the taste do you realize the spice of a great. Packs a punch at 100 proof without overwhelming alcohol taste. Lots of flavor. More complex than Bulleit Rye at less rye %. Bulleit is more mellow. Take your time with this one and enjoy. May be harsh for some depending on palate. Not for flavored rum, vodka and schnapps drinkers. Agree with Muncher review.

Solidly not good. Subtle carmel and rye aromas and flavors. Some oak. Hint of vanilla. Something floral in there as well. Dandelions maybe? I got no sweetness no char no peat. Super aggressive on the palate both straight and cut. Had to suffer getting the drink down. Update given some inspiration from irishman: Sawdust. Looking for that charred note but definitely nothing there. Very "young" tasting the bottle I have: aggressive, boozy, and still tons of caramel.

Irishman (2014-12-31):
Maybe you got what the critics call a "fatigued" bottle? Knob Creek is famous for their charred flavor profile in their bourbon and rye. It's odd that you wouldn't get any of that. From what you wrote here, I would probably recommend the Jefferson's 10yr Rye (if you can find it).

jamesthebrit (2015-02-01):
I definately got no charred profile. I'm more used to beer and I've for sure had bad bottles before so I wonder if this is a similar situation. Thanks for the heads up!

Not quite as good as KC's bourbon, but still an excellent whiskey. The rye spice and barrel char are aggressive and strong with only a faint bit of sweetness hiding in the background. It's like getting punched in the taste buds and then having the pain linger for a while. I like it. No offense, but wimps and (most) women should move along to another bottle.

Really good, but the high proof makes it a bit harsh on the way down. Definitely use this in something like a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned or on the rocks to take the edge off the burn. Also, its a bit overpriced for the value. You're paying for the Knob Creek name here. Still, a good rye offering that's worth your time to try.

Herein lies a deep philosophical question: if a manufacturer says something is something, how far can it drift from the 'typical' model before you question it? If this was labeled 'whisky', I'd give it four stars. But it's overly sweet and smoky for a rye, without much of the grain's typical spicy punch. Definitely off kilter somehow.

While it does not taste like asphalt to me, Knob does have a distinctive spice to it.  To some it may even feel like the spice is lighting you on fire, but that's the kick that makes Knob Creek and Knob Creek Rye one of my favorite whiskeys to enjoy in an Old Fashioned.  Perfect.

This is a lot of rye... no question at all. But it also has the same very heavy char flavor that characterizes the Knob Creek bourbon. This will probably appeal to some folks but I tend to associate it with asphalt.
