Proof66 Notes

The Laphroaig 10yr is considered the flagship and best-selling scotch from the distillery. It's renowned as being one of the best standards for the highly-peated Islay scotches.

Like so many distilleries, the founders Donald and Axel Johnston began production illicitly, it's hard to know when they first started but the official founding was in 1826.

Very good smoke monster. Quarter cask version is smoother and sweeter so even better.

Probably would round up to a five, but want to leave room at the top for a coupla really special malts. This is definitely a favorite though. One of the best that I can consistently afford.

If you have never had something like this, it spins your head on the first sip. It seems familiar yet I have never had anything quite like it. Don't ever think of using this for mixing into drinks. It is wonderful by itself. Everything KaiserSoze says below is right on the money. The best $50 I have spent in a long time.

I'll always remember just getting served a glass of the stuff in a bar and my friend being nearly blasted out of his chair just from the smoke! I will humbly offer that just a dainty splash of Drambuie at the end can be very rewarding (makes a drink called a Rusty Nail).

What an absolutely beautiful single malt! My first from Islay. This is not for the faint of heart! Nose - think of a bonfire of burning seaweed on the beach at midnight at high tide. Just a touch of iodine as well to balance the peat smoke. The palate is initially sweet, surprisingly, with that wonderful smokey sea air on the finish that lasts forever. Be sure not to add any more than just a few drops of water. I've found too much water not only mutes these bold smells & flavors, but takes starts messing with how perfectly balanced it is. Overall, simply outstanding! Can't wait to try the Quarter Cask!

Very intense and strongly flavored single malt. Heavy on the peat smoke with seaweed, iodine and medicinal notes. If you're an Islay lover or love smoky or peated whiskys, then Laphroaig is definitely for you. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT use this whisky to introduce someone to scotch! This is something you need to work your way up to and is so intense in terms of flavor that it's likely to offend many people's palates. On it's own terms, it's an excellent Islay malt and definitely one of my all time favorites

4.5 stars Peaaaaaty, imo on par with even the Uigedail by Ardbeg, and that for bout half the price, so Laphroaig is the one to buy if you are into peaty single malts.

This stuff single handedly made me a scotch drinker. For a long time, my only exposure to scotch was young blends with mild flavor. I was unimpressed and, more than that, even grew to disdain scotch in areas where "whiskey and coke" meant scotch and cola rather than the 'Murican bourbon edition. This drink has excellent flavors with an unmistakable peaty emphasis. A great introduction into what scotch can be. Since having this, I have tried several others (including the cask strength 10 year that seems to be rates the #1 scotch according to this site). Some may be better in certain aspects, but the Laphroaig 10 year regular strength maintains a balance that others simply do not meet. At $30 from the local costco, this cannot be beat in value, either.

cgtboy1988 (2016-05-06):
My experience has been just the opposite. Many of my friends who have had a taste of this became Scotch converts- even if they had less than spectacular opinions on the stuff before. That said, it does polarize and some do not like it at all. But I have found it rare that people who do not like this love other scotches, including some of the milder single malts from the mainland or blends.

Very nice for the price range (~$45 in Chicago). The first nose might will give a different impression of the expected taste...rich and peaty, though not overbearing or charred tasting, satisfying smooth finish

A wonderful scotch to take your time with. Lots of great flavor to contemplate. This is my first islay scotch. I was expecting the smokiness but was taken aback by the "taste of the sea" that I would attribute to the saltwater effect on the peat used. The second tasting I was prepared and was engrossed with the wonderful fullness of this scotch. This is a great scotch and my preference when I want a neat slow sipping full palate scotch. Enjoy. Looking forward to many more Islay scotch.

Intense medicine beginning. Lots of smoke, deep but not too long lasting. Great intense with not too much alcohol! Fascinating smokey.

I give it a 4.5 out of 5... To be honest, with this being my first bottle ever of scotch, I'm not really sure what to think. To me its very smoky forward with a little sweetness almost. Its taking me a little bit to get used to but its growing on me. I found this priced wrong at $25 and knowing a general area of price I couldn't pass it up, and I had been thinking about trying scotch for a while.

As advertised "the most richly flavored". 100% true. If you really like Scotch for the smokey flavor that seperates it from other whiskies you will love this. Smokey but followed with a sweetness akin to grapefruit sweetened with salt. To me this is the essence of scotch.

This was my first experience into the world of peated scotch from Islay some years ago. Loved it from the first sip. Pretty much every peated whisky I try now is compared to this in my mind. One of the best ways to spend 40 bucks!

Is the world's most popular Islay smoke bomb worth the accolades, or is it just another Glenlivet, meaning good but there are so many better malts? Depends on what you compare it with. I find it an immense compliment to that surprise 700+ pointer, the Connemara Peated Irish Single Malt. I can drink them side by side all night! But next to its Islay brethren, the Laphroaig 10 came off as an "Ardbeg Light." On its own it's a jolly well-balanced dram of fruits/flavor vs smoke. I can see why its devotees swear they always come back to the Laphroaig 10. A solid 4-star then.

Other reviews have summed this one up, either you like peaty smoky scotches or you don't... it's really that simple. If you do this is a good bottle to own. I remember my first time tasting the the saline, medicinal taste & thinking well thats odd... but as those flavors give way to a deep rich layer & finish of smoke it won me over. My guests that enjoy this I introduce to the quarter cask (sherry finished) version on their next pour & if you enjoy this I'd point you in that direction as well :)

This is a hard one to rate. If you really, really, REALLY like peat, it rates a 4.5 to 5 and is the standard bearer for the Islay single malts. If you like anodyne Canadians and somebody gave you a bottle of Laphroaig for Xmas, you made a face at the nose and a grimace at the taste. Perhaps it's fair to say Laphroaig is very good - of kind.

(3.5 out of four). Only 3.5 because the 10 year cask strength has spoiled me! Pleasant nose of smoke, tar, salt and iodine. Oily and delicious on the palate. Not super complex, which is actually good, because all of the flavors are strong and work beautifully. Surprisingly smooth finish, but not so much so that it's boring. Highly recommended, but get the cask strength if you can! $53 in my area.

Not a fan of most 'better' blended scotches and this was my first taste of single malt. I was pleasantly surprised, the scotch has a nice flavour a very smooth finish with perhaps a slight burn that compliments the smokey flavour profile well enough that if you were not looking for one you may not even notice it is there. A must buy, either a glass at a decently stocked bar or a bottle, for anybody interested in seeing the difference between common blended scotches and a good single malt. For the price it can't be beat.

I can see why this whiskey is the choice of many people who like smokey, peaty tastes. It's good at it and reasonably priced. However, I just don't like such tastes!

Peat and tar, short finish. It's so basic whisky that it is hard to say anything. Jack daniels of single malts. but like Jack, it's quite enjoyable...

SMOKE AND PEAT! This bottle is packed with flavor -- and by flavor I mean you will be hit and hit hard with peat and smoke. It's got a really nice earthiness to it, but it's a stiff drink, no matter what your tongue level (cf. the guy who posted above me). It's got a strong finish... hate to say that it burns, but it'll get ya. The mouthfeel is very pleasant and rich, despite the fact that it finishes so strong It's spicy but complex, even with so much smokiness. But, I absolutely love this stuff -- although it's one you gotta be in the mood for. It's great to have in my home bar, though I think you need to have something smoother around. Maybe something from the Highlands region would be a nice compliment, since the Islay scotches (like Laphroaig) are known to be the most flavorful of the other regions.

Im fairly new to scotch and this will reflect that. I saw how highly it was rated on proof66 and was excited to try it. But I have not trained my tongue to handle this sort of scotch yet. It is very complex and I will be better prepared to enjoy it in the future. For now, I have to give it four stars.
