Proof66 Notes

Laphroaig 18yr single malt scotch is is meant as a replacement for the slightly younger Laphroaig 15yr expression.

The 2012 Beverage Testing Institute deemed the Laphroaig 18 to have "excellent balance and style"... they also noted a menthol cigarette flavor note, which we take to mean would pair well with cigars and cigarettes in general.

4.5 stars would be more appropriate. This is a delicious peaty dram, but the 10-year cask-strength is still my Holy Grail, and for less money. Still, a fantastic scotch.

Very nice. Smoother than 10 year old. Almost as good as Lagavulin.

4.35/5; I think my review most immediately echoes the preceding review. I liked it but I don't think the experience dramatically out shown the 10. I believe this is a style thing. Islay lover's, in my opinion, enjoy the wild aggressive nature of their scotches, in this case the 18 is more refined and a touch gentler but that really isn't the direction I prefer to go with my islays. I'd take a younger cask strength offering most of the time.

I really like this one but it's not better than the 10 year, especially when the increase in price is factored in. The 18 is more mellow, which some may prefer, but I prefer the aggressive and dramatic flavor profile of the 10.

Interesting. Still a huge nose of bandaid and iodine, but the medicine cabinet notes are smoother on the tongue; I got salinity and a certain smoky herbalness. Finish was a little tight.

I still miss Laphroaig 15yr and Im sure I always will. Since this took its place, of course I had high hopes. First, the ABV is higher at 48% so its a powerful sipper. The flavor and nose is wonderful but honestly not what I expected. Laphroaig 15yr was powerful in the smoke and peat department and as its older brother turn replacement, I expected the same yet smoother. Instead I would say oak and vanilla jump out the most with smoky peat taking a back seat. Its still more prevalent than most other scotches but its not what I expect from a Laphroaig. Still, this is a great sipper with just a couple drops of cold water added to open it up. Unfortunately, this is also a jump in price. I was paying around $65-$70 for Laphroaig 15yr. Expect to pay around $120-$150 for 18yr. Yikes!
