Proof66 Notes

Larceny Bourbon is an homage to John E Fitzgerald. In the press release, they describe a semi-mythical story of Fitzgerald pilfering bourbon from the storehouse of Julian Van Winkle as a treasury agent, who was so discriminating in his selection that those particular barrels became known as Fitzgerald Barrels. Hence the tagline:

***I've decided to revisit this one. Got another 50 ml on the neck of a bottle of EW BIB and I can't believe it's the same juice. It's not that it was better or worse, just different. I sampled the entire bottle neat in a Glencairn glass. The nose was incredible. It was baked sweet potato, complete with the butter and brown sugar. I definitely didn't get that from my first bottle of this. The taste, while still quite good, doesn't live up to the nose. I still get that sweet entry, now backed by fall spices and a big hit of heat. Definitely drinks hotter than it's 92 proof. I detected none of the citrus I had picked up on in my earlier review, and not much oak. Could they be using younger stock? Uncharacteristically thick and clingy for a wheater, but for me that's a positive. This is definitely a step above MM, but if you want a wheated bourbon and can't find a Weller Antique or Weller 12, this is a very good alternative.

Muncher (2015-10-11):
I've always wanted to try this one, but it has proven impossible to find throughout the dozens of liquor stores I've been to here in the Midwest. It's strange, because I can get other offerings made by Heaven Hill.

storcke (2016-07-12):
I would like to add to my 2012 review, and this seems a good place to do it. Please note that HH has changed the flavor since the original roll-out. Originally the citrus/fruit/APPLE was very prominent, but so was a sharp oak bite right down the middle of the tongue. The newer bottilings have lost the sharp oak, but also the startling fruits. It was my favorite bourbon for 3 years, but now I have gotten to like the new flavor profile even more--smoother, fruitier. Still puts regular (bitter) MM to shame, at $8-$10 less.

BDanner (2016-11-29):
I'm with you...I'm planning on updating my review. Definitely not the same profile as the first pour of this I had.

I was so excited when I saw this on the shelf because up until now, Larceny was not available in Michigan. But gosh, I am pretty disappointed! My experience was not the greatest. Without adding water, it’s awfully hot, especially since it’s only 92 proof. I’ve had other whiskey’s well over 100 proof that were no where near as hot as this. I didn’t find it to very balanced either and nothing flowed well. I paid $29 for this bottle which is exactly the same price as regular Makers Mark. Side-by-side, I’ll choose MM. And for a few dollars less, I’ll take Weller Antique 107, and it’s not even close! The one saving grace was it did work well in cocktails, so I’ll give it 3 stars. I won’t be buying again though.

Nice deeply sweet, saturated flavors. A bit of citrus hits you just after sipping. Medium long sweet finish. A very enjoyable premium bourbon.

A very good wheated bourbon. Strong vanilla and maple aroma. The taste is sweet, like candy. After a few seconds a spice develops and a cinnamon/caramel taste enters. It finishes smooth with cinnamon and oak. An enjoyable bourbon. A must try. It will give other wheat bourbons a run for their money.

I agree with those who say this competes with Makers Mark. A wheated bourbon that really is valued priced. When I taste I come across cereal and sweetness. It is really nice. I plan to buy again.

An excellent wheated boubon. Definitely more sophisticated, flavorful, and easy to drink that MM, without MM's bitter edge, and MM costs $10 more. Not quite as good as WL Weller 12-year, or even MM46, but the Weller is very hard to find and MM46 costs twice as much. And for the next year they're offering what amounts to a half-price rebate. I'm sold!

Got one bottle, and it wasn't offensive, just totally unimpressive. Not much character, and Heaven Hill makes way better things. For example, you can ditch this for the delicious Elijah Craig 12yr, or some Rittenhouse Rye. Recently tastes this alongside 17 other bourbons at a distillery event, and it didn't stand out at all.

Very smooth and uncomplicated. It is useful to do a side by side taste test to identify differences. A lot of people make the comparison between Larceny and Makers Mark. I scored them both at 4 stars, but I wish that I could give Larceny 4.5. It has more flavor than MM and is still pretty smooth. It is a hell of a lot cheaper and I plan on keeping this one in stock.

It's in my Top 5. The wheat is strong, it packs some bite but is actually smooth going down with no aftertaste. I've seen the comparisons to Makers Mark; sorry, Larceny far outshines MM.

Let it be known up front that I've never been a big fan of wheated bourbons (or wheated anything for that matter). This one's not bad - nice, smooth, slightly sweet front side to the flavor profile with an immediate spiciness to the finish, but then the lingering flavor is just flat bitter. Pretty good until it hits that point. All in all a great bourbon for the price point.

Definitely looking to rival Maker's mark. Smooth enough and sippable straight. Worth a shot for the pricetag

'Wheated bourbon'. Well, it is pretty smooth on the palate, though there's a touch of heat in the back of the mouth that makes it a little ragged. Flavor is good -- not much sweetness at all, and a decent amount of smokiness without feeling like one is licking a campfire. Pretty decent little bourbon, and somewhat old school.
