Proof66 Notes

Lock Stock & Barrel 13yr rye whiskey is made from a base of 100% rye, which will please rye fans but be a little dry and robust for those used to rye whiskey blended with wheat or other grain to smooth out the spicy flavors. 13 years is a considerable amount of time for new charred American Oak, which implies strong, oak-driven flavors of caramel and vanilla.

A very tasty rye. Pleasing spice on the opening notes. Wood and spice flavors stay with you for a while after drinking. I sipped on this back to back with Angel's Envy Rye and I'm afraid the Lock Stock and Barrel suffered a bit from the comparison. It is a wonderful and solid rye but seemed a bit dull after the candied pyrotechnics of the Angel's Envy Rye.

I saw this on the shelf in a swank wine bar in Ocean City, MD. While Ive been on a huge Manhattan kick recently (with only rye, of course) I had several pours of this, neat. Its a controversial spirit - it is originally from a large plant in Canada - before settling into the brands hands and aging. Google it. Anyways, it is a bit hot for some, at 101 proof, but makes an outstanding manhattan. Furthermore, I could easily be happy sipping it neat any day. While its not Mastersons, really, what else is? But! To be honest, the next time I drop $140 on booze I will buy two great $70 bottles instead.
