Proof66 Notes

The Macallan 12yr is the flagship scotch from the distillery known the world over. It is aged in sherry oak casks, which they say gives it rich complexity relative to other scotch whiskies.

The Macallan Distillery was first licensed to sell whisky in 1824 by founder Alexander Reid (though—like most distilleries—it was probably producing illegally long before that).

It was hard to drink neat, but adding 1 ice cube made a world of difference. Very flavorful & complex. Would like to buy again but hefty price tag keeps getting in the way....

A recommended Highland single malt. Yes it is more expensive then most of its peers in the region, but they are one of the few start to finish distilleries, they pride themselves in using superior materials and they feel it's worth it. 86 proof, the sweetness of the sherry cask comes through in the nose, a wisp of smoke, vanilla, slight fruit in the arrival, there is some nuttiness and it doesn't overstay it's welcome, adding a touch of water makes this whisky sweeter, I prefer it neat no water, 4.2/5 single malt score. October 2016 Update---the 12 year sherry cask has been phased out and, for better or worse, replaced by the Gold series

4.1/5, This really impressed me my first time, my recent bottle was a bit of a let down. I've heard that Macallan is having issues keeping their quality up with all the demand & for me this isn't up there in the upper echelons of wine whiskey's. Check dalmore & balvenie's similiar age for a better experience IMO

Overpriced, but good. You definitely pay an additional premium simply for the name on the label which is unfortunate. It is better than the Aberlour and Balvenie 12s, but not as good as the Dalmore 12. Would like to try more from Macallan, but I really don't like overpaying for stuff.

mct (2015-07-30):
I think this is already a bargain considering the sherry oak finish. Also around ~$10 cheaper than the Glenlivet 16y/o Nadurra :)

Muncher (2015-11-25):
A 12 year old scotch being within $10 of a 16 year old scotch is a bargain?...and there are many decent sherry finished scotches that can be had for $20 less than this one.

This is one of the standards for Speyside malts. Between the Macallan, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich 12 year olds (big 3?), I find this to be maltier/chewier in character and taste. More Highland-ish?

Highly enjoyable. A great Scotch for a cocktail party as its appeal is broad. The other reviews hit the nail on the head in regards to the sweet influence of the sherry cask aging.

Wonderful scotch. High in sherry flavor and influence. Nose heavy. Smooth finish. My first scotch and it still remains in my top 3 singles. Buy this!

Rich amber color. Very sweet nose. A lot of sherry sweetness up front that gives way to a clean fruity astringency. Very malty mouth feel that coats, with a long sweet finish. A few drops of water will open this up a bit and bring the fruit forward for better balance.

A rich, robust Scotch that is fruity. I am admittedly very partial to sherry finished whisky and this is awesome!

My first go with this brand. Though it was good, I was not as awed as I expected. Good Scotch for the price.

A newbie to scotch. This is my favorite so far. Veeeery smooth. No one flavor overpowers. Highly recommend. Can enjoy neat b/c of such smoothness.

This single malt has a distinct sweetness that its equivalent competitors/compatriots (depending on who you are) seem to lack. Its smoothness is also part of its unique character. This was the single malt I enjoyed most when I had just started sampling whiskies, and that says a lot, not having a seasoned palate for the likes of liquor such as this. I will certainly revisit this one in the future.
